Almost brought home a Conure today. What a character that little bird was!
Went to the pet store to inquire after tadpoles/bullfrogs. My garden is overcome with beetles and the frog that had live there for years ended up squashed in the driveway last Summer. I don't know how or why that frog left my garden and met his demise but anyway>

Went to the local pet store and they do have tadpoles really cheap. All I have to do is set up a water saucer and some frog houses and I'll go get them later in the week.

While in the pet store, I became enchanted by a peach-front conure. His color spot is more like fluorescent red than peach but boy was he/she a character. Seriously had me thinking about bringing a bird home up until I found out the except the price tag.

So I just did some internet searching about conures and they are known as clowns and quite intelligent. And potentially noisy, although I think that depends on how much attention and training they get.

Maybe I'll keep my eyes open for a Conure Rescue situation.

If anyone here has a conure, would you opine on how they are as pets?

1. I've had lovebirds and a macaw, and all I can say is, they ARE noisy.
Forget that training thing, they will still vocalize. Conures are wonderful little birds, and are intelligent. But they are expensive to buy and expensive to keep. You have to go to special vets trained for birds. Food has to be varied and I always ended up kicking myself for buying them things that I would never pay for if it were for me to eat----corn on the cob in the middle of the winter, fruits all year. And so much ending up on the bottom of the cage. Agh. Do look for one that is hand-raised and tame. You would be surprised how much fun birds can be.

10. That would work, except with big birds, you give them the corn
raw on the cob. They love to hold it while they are eating the kernels.

4. I watched that with a friend a few years ago. What an amazing fellow that was-
who watched after the parrots.

3. I also was hypnotized by a conure in a pet store
It was the most engaging thing. Very interactive with me.

I wish I could have a bird. My grandma had a canary in her kitchen.

Birds are great, but if you are interested in getting one you should do some research to learn a lot about the particular species, what their needs are, and determine if a bird would be right for you. They are intelligent and need a lot of attention. BTW, I love birds.

6. I love birds too
but I am too poor and clumsy to have one. But I LOVE enjoying other peoples's birdies.

8. I like the reason you're in the store in the first place!
Curious why not a toad though...they're smarter than frogs and they're insectivores too, are they not?

Just thinking a toad might not end up squashed in the driveway...
although frogs are cool too.

9. I don't know from conures....
....but if they're anything like these guys:

(a mated pair of green parrots that have taken up residence in the tree outside my office window)

ask if free earplugs are included with the purchase. :)
