Is there anything to do in Detroit?
I'm going for a one-day work conference thing in September, but we're getting there the night before, so I think I might end up with some time to kill. I have a friend who lives in Windsor, so hopefully I'll be able to see her.

So, what is there to do in Detroit?

1. What I find I like doing in Detroit is getting the hell out of Detroit. ...
...Seriously, the one time I went there it was to visit its casinos. I lived in Toledo for two years and never made the drive to Detroit from there.

6. Greektown USED to be awesome
The casino ruined it. The only decent place to eat there these days is the New Parthenon.

3. There's a ton to do here
I like to say, it's a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit it. What do you like to do? Will you have a car? Where are you staying?

I'll probably just end up having time for dinner or something. I wish I knew where I was staying! I'll keep you all posted!

8. If you want, you can PM me
When you have more details. I'd be happy to give you advice. I'm a big supporter/promoter of Detroit. There are great, inexpensive restaurants here. All kinds of ethnic cuisine.

11. Also...
If you were planning on seeing your friend in Windsor, you'll need a passport. And the border can be a real pain.

16. It's worth spending a couple days here if you can
If you only have the evening free, most tourist attractions will be closed. Although our art museum (dia.org) is open until 10 on Friday evenings. And they have live music and a bar--quite civilized. So your evening will probably center around going to a nice restaurant.

14. Go to the Henry Ford in Dearborn, was there a couple weeks
Edited on Wed Jul-14-10 11:15 PM by doc03
ago and toured the Rouge Factory where they make the F-150 pickup. The F-150 factory is the largest green factory in world they have plants growing on the roof which help cool the building in the summer, heat it in the winter and purifies the water, basically saves a lot on energy costs for the plant. Visited the Henry Ford Museum, very nice. There is also Greenfield Village which I didn't have time to visit this time. It's an 81 acre historical village they say it is like going back in time to the 1800s.

21. This sounds facetious, but I am serious...I would tour the grand ruins.
There are a lot of grand old buildings just falling down. I find that fascinating (and, yes, sad, but that's not going to bring them back).

22. the owner of a company I worked for there
made a fortune buying these old homes and moving them to Farmington Hills.

The city would sell them for a dollar if you agreed to move them...ten grand for a lot in FH and ten grand moving costs...instant 125k
