Anyone ever had any of this breed for pets?

I'm a cat person, but I loved them on Magnum, PI.

1. No, but I always wanted one.
They are wonderful dogs, smart, easy to train, and not at all like they are stereotyped on TV.

2. A friend had one
Nice dog, but they need to be trained well or they can be difficult. (Hers had a few neurotic behaviors but was a good tempered dog)

3. I've had a few come through my rescue.
My mother has also had a couple from a rescue in the NE. Good dogs, but a very smart breed. They need an attentive owner.

At least, we thought he was a shepherd-dobie mix. Maybe some great dane, too.

7. A friend of mine had four of 'em, two at a time.
Great dogs. They thought they were human. Or they thought we were dogs. By that I mean they asserted themselves as members of the pack. When we'd sit around the living room table with our beers and other stuff, one of 'em would even try to sit with his butt on the couch and one paw on the table, like he was one of us. And so he was. Cute.

They were absolute dicks to people they didn't like, though. And it was impossible to figure out what their criteria was for liking or not liking certain people. I don't know if that was just a peculiarity for those dogs in particular, or if that's something that's common to the breed. What I do know is it's really hard for one man to control two dobies if they decide someone is 'wrong'.

Like any dog, though, treat them well and they'll live and die for you.

8. We have a quiet, gentle friend who had two quiet, gentle Dobies for a long while.
They would browse among us in his living room like great grazing deer. Very intelligent, very sweet. I like to think that dogs are almost always what we make them.

9. Beautiful, smart dogs but they're a handful.
I like them. If I were a dog person I'd consider a dobie on the short list of breeds.

10. They are wonderful dogs...and look much nicer when their ears are left intact..
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 05:42 PM by BrklynLiberal

In Europe they do not cut the ears. If you see European dog shows, most of the breeds that are cut and docked in the US are left intact in Europe.

12. my nephew has one
Zoe was a rescue (has scars and a partial tail amputation to show for her mistreatment).

When the other two dogs (boxer and boston terrier) in the family get into an argument, Zoe runs over and breaks it up. She's a pretty sweet dog.
