Just got our 2nd opinion for Heidi...
The other vet said pretty much the same as the first. It's her liver. He can see she's jaundiced and said that it's just a matter of time.

He said we don't need to make a decision right away, but do need to keep an eye on her to ensure she's drinking.

15 years just seems all too brief.

1. My dear WillParkinson...
It sure goes by in a flash, doesn't it?

Take care of your baby girl......and yourself too...

I'm so sorry...

3. I'm sorry your fur friend is ill and
may be leaving you. Know that it will be the end of suffering for her, as she surely doesn't feel well, and will feel worse before this is over. Letting her go will be relieving her pain. I hope knowing that will give you some small amount of comfort, even though it will be so difficult.

Love to you all.

5. it's a quality of life issue now, Will
you have to make sure she's drinking and then just watch for the signs - she'll let you know when it is time and you have to care more what she thinks than what you want

6. Yeah, she's drinking...
Also eating dog biscuits.

When we put Misty down a couple years ago I knew there was nothing that could be done to save her. It broke my heart. I'm not ready to let Heidi go, even though I know I probably have to do it soon. The one thing about our household is that if one of our family does move on we go out as soon as we can to rescue another, because they're all so much family they would want us to do it.

9. I'm glad that you got a second opinion on Heidi
and sorry that it was basically the same as the first. However, at least the second vet is saying you don't have to make a decision just yet. And yes, 15 years is too brief. I wholeheartedly agree.

10. It's too brief.....enjoy the time you have together
I had a Lab/Shepherd mix with a liver tumor. She lived for 6 months after diagnosis (she was 13.5 when she passed). She ate and drink to the end. Glad you were able to get a second opinion and no one knows how much remaining time you will have .

11. I know how hard it is...
...but because you love Heidi and she is a member of your family, you will know what is the right thing to do when that dreaded time comes. It's heartbreaking, indeed. Believe me... I've been down that road. Heidi has had a good life with you, and when your conscience says that she is suffering too much, you need to take that terrible step. Hold her close, let your face be the last thing she sees in life.

Sending many hugs to you, your family and - of course - Heidi.

12. Very sorry to hear this.
There are no words...because you cannot turn love for furries into words.

Thank you for giving her a good life, for caring for her, and when the time comes, for taking that one last, heroic step for her.

...she'll let you know when it's too much for her. :grouphug:
