Ernest Borgnine: American Treasure
This morning, just before I had planned to get out of bed, I was scanning the satellite TV listings one last time just out of curiousity. I came across a movie called "Marty" that had started mere minutes before. I turned the TV to that channel, and watched the whole movie, staying in bed two whole hours more than I normally do.

I've always loved the guy, from back in the day when we used to get stoned and watch McHale's Navy while cutting high school, to his role in "The Dirty Dozen".

Veteran, Academy Award Winner, All-Around Cool Dude.

Ernie, this one's for you. Thanks for sharing yourself with us.

2. I can't think of a role he was ever in that he didn't act the hell out of.
Comedy, drama, suspense, etc., he did it all.

11. He's kind of like Jeff Bridges in that he's made even crappy movies...
at least somewhat interesting to watch just because he's in them.

3. I liked him in "Escape from New York" and...
.
...I LOVED him as the brutal, murderous train conductor in
the Depression-Era setting for "Emperor of the North" -- a
short story from Jack London about an epic battle between
him and the "King of the Hobos", Lee Marvin.
.
Brutish and violent -- still it's a captivating film, made
all the more so by his involvement in it.
.

7. Isn't he great doing the voice for that character?
I love it whenever Mermaid Man is on the show...and Tim Conway is also funny as Barnacle Boy.

10. His resume is unbelievable
Ernest has to be one of the hardest working actors in history.

I'll never forget a made for TV movie he did in the 70s called "Legend in Granite" about Vince Lombardi. You could have sworn you were watching Vince himself.

14. He's great. "Bad Day At Black Rock," and as Vince Lombardi. Check out his autobiography -
it's a riot. He was in the USN a few years before WWII. He recently met with the Chief of Naval Operations and talked about how great cheap prostitutes were back in the '30s on shore leave!

My dad said McHale's Navy was a documentary at times.

18. I've always been moved by his performance as the Centurion in "Jesus of Nazareth."

The Centurion is one of my favorite figures in the New Testament. Such trust. Such belief...
