Little Children is on now (I saw it when it first came out)and it's right up there with the best of them.

1. I kinda like Zorba the Greek.
It'a a little "noble savage" but still, appreciating the sheer messiness of life is a great theme.

5. Just about any Robert Altman movie (but especially Nashville)
Well, the one about Hollywood was kinda dumb. But his loose form type of films really catch the randomness and unfocus of reality.

12. I agree about Nashville
Amazing and unsettling film that was really prescient in its depiction of the shifting political wind in America in the mid-'70s.

6. Harvie Krumpet
Best animated short of 2004. I saw it along with the other nominees and knew it had to win.

You can watch the entire film at youtube. It's a little over 20 minutes long.

10. I love that movie. Good call
I like how every single character is simultaneously awful yet you also can occasionally sympathize/empathize with. No one is a cardboard cutout easily reduced to "good" or "bad" just like real life, although some sway more one way than the other.

11. the Education of Charlie Banks was surprisingly good
I say that because it was directed by Fred Durst, and it made me conflicted because I formerly had no respect for him. It's a bit simplistic and/or obvious at times, but was really good.

There are others, but I am not awake yet so may come back to this later.

The Human Condition meant. I'll need to watch it again. Also, I've heard a lot about Happiness. There are so many others like The Grapes of Wrath.

50. An odd choice, but "City of Angels" did for me.
I hated the Wim Wenders contraption (yeah, I know, everyone else loves it, but we're talking about me now). For some reason the hokie Nicholas Cage thing worked for me, or it did at the very end. Most of it I thought was pretty manipulative, but the very last scene, where he has given up everything to live as a human, and then lost everything as a human, and then steps out onto the beach and just enjoys the feel of the world despite all his pain--that was the human condition to me. I've never seen it done better.

So maybe that was more one scene than a whole movie. :)

51. The Truman Show.
A creature of habit performing the same tasks day in, day out. Cannot stretch beyond his island because of well-engineered fear that people put in him. Doesn't catch on to his "life's" consumerist message or the obvious/not so obvious product placements. Steered away from the one he loves due to circumstances "beyond his control" and settles.

True, the movie requires massive suspension of disbelief, but the metaphor is strong.

52. I really loved The Truman Show too and exactly for the
metaphor(plus I thought the acting was outstanding). I'll have to Netflix City of Angels to watch it again. It's amazing how I can see a movie when it first comes out and don't appreciate it as much as I do when I see it years later.
