I need a mix
I need some new music to listen to at work. doesn't have to be new new.

I loved Mr. Scorpio's link to Soulive/Dave Matthews Joyful Girl cover the other day. So, can anyone suggest some good stuff?

It can't be too hard. Although I do play buddy guy when I'm by myself... I can't usually get away with that.

because I already have this stuff, please do not suggest anything by:

jolie holland
be good tanyas
bob dylan
pink floyd
neil young
chris isaak
gillian welch
lucinda williams
the decemberists
neko case
the beatles
billy bragg and wilco
wilco (unless it's really recent)
son volt
cat power
cowboy junkies
csn&y
david byrne
DeVotchKa
Django Reinhart
Ray Charles (unless it's pretty obscure)
Iron and Wine
The Shins

sooooo... any suggestions?

thank you in advance.

smooches.

1. Jane's Addiction.
Led Zeppelin
Steely Dan
The Cardigans (First Band on the Moon)
Sweet
Belly
The Sundays
MADNESS

...that'll hold ya awhile. Aside from the Zeppelin, based on the bands you list I think you might enjoy these.

2. I love Madness but they're too "loud" for work
I have some accoustic zep on some mixes but, again, nothing too hard... I can't get away with it.

Jane's Addiction... the things I used to have... would also seem a little too hard for me to get away with at work.

I do get away with some Breeders, but nothing with feedback, etc.

I heard steely dan so much growing up that... I've never actually owned anything of theirs.

Cardigans... maybe.

I'll check on the others.

Thanks!!!

6. Ah.
I kind of skipped over that "at work" thing.

Skip the Cardigans. They're pop, they're fun, but they're a little loud. Also, skip Belly. Too heavy. Sweet is the best bubblegum rock band ever; you decide if that helps you. The recommendation for the Sundays stands.

The Cocteau Twins.
Soundtrack: O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Joe Jackson
George Benson
Hall & Oates
Sting

7. maybe. have. oh yeah. nonono. nonono. nononononoooooooo
isn't it weird? it's like I have this idea of something in my head but I don't know what it is I want to hear.

I know The Cardigans. not a big fan but they're okay.

Sweet. ugh. not my thing.

I also play Big Momma Thornton and Etta James. And Otis Redding and some Erika Badu and Percy Sledge and even some Lauren Hill and Wilson Pickett.

in the big scheme of things... I'm more of a Wilson Picket rather than, say, The Supremes kind of music lover.. does that make sense?

anyway, the decode on the subject line - have O Bro at work. Soundtrack to Amelie. Soundtrack from Mad Men.

I still have Joe Jackson on cassette!!! I am so freakin old. That's a good idea. Thanks!

do not like Geo. Benson or Sting - just heard them too much and too... idunno for me at this time.

hall&oates... not it either.

You are so nice to keep making suggestions!!

And thanks for The Sundays.

9. I have more.
And I too prefer Wicked Wilson Pickett to Diana and the Girls. My wife likes Hall & Oates; personally, I live fine with nothing by them. You may like these suggestions better.

Are you familiar with the great bluesman Taj Mahal?

Louis Jordan

Curtis Mayfield

Spiral Starecase (More Today than Yesterday)

The Chi-Lites (Have You Seen her, Oh Girl)

Susan Tedeschi

Rickie Lee Jones

Jackie Wilson

Van Morrison

12. gonna have to get further out there
yes, have even seen Mr. Taj Mahal.

have Tedeschi and her hub, Trucks. and Ms. Jones. And Van.

spiral staircase, chi-lites... not my thing.

Curtis and Jackie - have, but not a lot of.

This is so weird because, as I'm looking at these - it seems like there's a lot of music at work but...

I really like Amy Winehouse's Me and Mr. Jones. I think I want her to release a new cd asap. :)

Andrew Bird. a little Regina Spektor,

Have you ever heard Elvis Costello's cds North and When I was Cruel? I LOVE both of those. In the first he's crooning. The second just makes me smile. Spooky Girlfriend and Tear off Your Own Head... I play those too.

Tom Waits is too harsh if he's not doing a ballad sort of thing...

I feel like bringing in a mix with "What Condition My Condition Was In." lol. so weird. Kenny Rogers and the Dude. and work.

4. yeah, I've got some world music at work too.
maybe I should check out some more.

Have Ry Cooder's stuff with other musicians.

You can download old music/singers from The Smithsonian via the online archives. I found some Victoria Spivey there... I bet they might have some older things from some griots.

thanks for this suggestion, too.

I like The Sundays' version of Wild Horses (from the suggestions above.)

5. my local community radio station has a pretty good show
Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 08:59 PM by Kali
(on now!) Thursday nights - you can stream to check out stuff or just look at some of his past playlists.

http://www.kxci.org/

playlist (refresh as needed or use search for past shows)
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kxci/guide.guidemain?action=viewPlaylist&playlistID=573682&eventID=1627

stream
http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/kxci/ppr/index.shtml

good Hispanic shows on Wednesday nights, Americana at noon Saturday, Surf and cool older rock on sunday evenings at 8, etc etc check all the shows playlists - tons of stuff you never hear on commercial radio. Mostly triple A stuff on the daytime shows.

Our esteemed DUer MiddleFingerMom used to have a REALLY good comedy show (surprise!) but the station got taken over by fascists. He was one of the few who stood up for the truth and they smacked him down, took away his show blah blah - it has beena nightmare, but it is still a pretty good music station and there has been a lot of progress. No it is just a regular dysfunctional organization as opposed to a freaking twilight zone.

8. It's great that you have a community radio station
we have one here too. sorry to hear about the troubles where you are.

I used to volunteer here, but had to stop when my schedule got too weird. I actually do not like to talk into a mic so I didn't like that part of it. I still have friends who work there.

anyway, there's a world music festival here every year so I'm fortunate that I get to hear a lot of different musicians. they have a hispanic segment too. community radio is a great thing - I wish more cities had them.

but world music, etc. at the moment -- that's not how my ears feel inclined.

my local station plays too much bluegrass, etc. for me on Sats.a.m. so I'm off that sort of thing too.

do you ever get this idea that you want to hear some music but you don't know what it is? and then you hear some things and you think... yeah, kinda like that! - I'm having one of those weird moments - and even tho there's tons of music at work - I know it too well.
