Does this traditional exhortation of "good appetite" before a meal strike you as gratuitous?

I wouldn't be at your restaurant or in your dining room if I didn't have a good appetite.
In fact, if I wasn't feeling peckish, I'd wouldn't even consider eating at all.

Keeping to bodily cravings, it seems to be the equivalent of a bathroom attendant wishing you, "distended bladder", or of the proprietor of a bordello wishing you a, "raging erection".
