DU Car Mechanics, part deux
94 Saturn, SL1. It has an intermittent problem that has increased in frequency until it is almost always doing it. When in park or neutral it "idles" at approaching 3000 RPM. When put into drive it will accelerate to almost 50 MPH without ever touching the gas.

It never registered a code until recently. When it did I checked the code using a jumper wire, it sets a code 32. This is called an EGR problem but there are apparently a range of conditions that will set this code. They are:

DTC 32 will set if:

Vacuum between .25v to 2.6v (60 and 25 km/h).
TP sensor is between 5 and 70 percent.
Throttle is constant.
Vehicle speed is greater than 25 km/h (15 mph).
Coolant temperature above 70ºC (158ºF).
Minimum engine run time of 15 sec.
Short term fuel trim (integrator) does not move at least 10 counts in five seconds.


Prior to this I have replaced the O2 sensor with no effect. This Saturn has TBFI and I cannot detect any sticking in the cable.

This problem has plagued me for weeks now and the Saturn mechanics in my area are dedicated idiots whose love of money has not somehow inspired them to actually obtain any skill in troubleshooting, thus I cannot afford to turn the problem over to them. So, I turn to you, the most intelligent and diverse group on the internet.

Any ideas?

1. Not a mechanic, but did find this by googling:
Check the tightness of the female terminal grip with a spare male terminal.
EGR passages (cylinder head and intake manifold) restricted or blocked could
cause a DTC 32.
EGR is ported vacuum. In the event EGR solenoid fails you will still get EGR.
Check for vacuum present at EGR solenoid connection and insure hose is
not plugged.
DTC 32 Trouble Chart:

Attach vacuum pump to EGR hose at throttle body. Apply vacuum while observing EGR valve.
Does valve open when vacuum is applied? If NO go to next step.
-If YES: Problem intermittent; see Diagnostic Aids.
Disconnect vacuum hose from EGR valve. Attach vacuum pump to EGR valve. Apply vacuum
while observing EGR valve.
Does valve open when vacuum is applied? If YES go to next step.
-If NO: EGR valve defective.
Inspect EGR hoses.
Are the EGR hoses plugged or leaking?
-If YES:Repair hoses.
-If NO: EGR solenoid is defective.

2. sounds like....
a vacuum leak.This means the tbfi is sucking air that it shouldn't be.3000 rpm idle would be a large vacuum line or intake manifold gasket.
