Does MTV just totally SUCK? Or am I just getting Old?
I tried to watch MTV for the past couple of days and all I could really see was GARBAGE and I'm not talking about the great Shirley Manson and Butch Vig band either! Even though Rock is my main taste, I'm not anti-Rap or R&B..I grew up listening to P.E., Prince, Cameo, Slick Rick, Beasties etc and still hold that music dear to my heart but this stuff on MTV is pure crap in my opinion. And do not get me started about that talentless hack Britney. And the Rock bands..Geeze what is it a contest to sound and look alike or something? The bands are just pathetic..
Then I started to think..Am i just getting older ( I'm 37 ) and my tastes are different now..Would I in my teens and early 20's Like this music? ( I shudder to think if I did! )
I don't know but I do know this, MTV shows just as much crap as the Fox news network..
What do you guys think?
Scott

12. Well at one point MTV didnt suck...
They would play Bowie, U2, Motels, Pretenders and up and comming new bands WHO DID NOT TRY TO SOUND THE SAME all the time..But that was way way back..It got good agian when Peal jam and soundgarden broke but I have not watch it since they took off 120 minutes..I watched it off and on the past weeks and could not BELIVE the amount of no talent hacks that are trying to sing..Or rap..
My GOD do these people need to know what Rap really is???

10. Whoa, that's scary!
You and I both said 1997 as the last decent year for MTV. I'm detecting a cosmic alignment taking place on DU....

7. I'm 35 and I haven't been able to stomach MTV for a LOOOONG time
It was great when it was new, of course then I didn't have cable so I was shit outta luck. During the alternative rock era of the early 90's it improved... a little. Beavis and Butthead were awesome IMO, and a lot of the videos for the alternative bands were good. But since 1997 I haven't been able to do anything but shake my head whenever I flip past it.

8. It sucks.
VH1 is getting almost as bad. VH1 for a while was THE music station because MTV sucks. Now they do Lifestyles of the rich and famous. Why?

To MTV and VH1: Go back to doing music. Do you remember music?

9. MTV was great for about 7 years...
but then around 1987, it started sucking big giant hairy elephant balls, and it's been sucking ever since. Its marathon record of suckage is second only to that of Saturday Night Live.

13. you actually saw music videos on MTV?
MTV has the DUMBEST fucking programming EVER in the history of television.

It SUCKS so bad and it thinks it's cool.

It's a classic example of what happens when something has NO COMPETITION. Because, remember, it has no competition.

I'd be perfectly happy if the FCC shut down MTV for whatever reason they wanted. It's insulting

14. I gave up on MTV shortly after it started...
As an (even older than you) Rock fan with eclectic tastes, I find new, original, non-corporate music on Radio K, from the University of Minnesota. I think they do a webcast as well. They play lots of things I don't like, but I have found some great music and bands through that station. After a ten year hiatus from Rock (switched to classical and opera), I'm so excited to find new music.

17. Never really been that into MTV..
I used to watch that TRL show to see whose video made #1..and now I don't even know why since it was always the same everyday.

And I didn't even really like the music, I just wanted some other type of band to knock the boy band out of the #1 spot!

22. And let's not forget the other good stuff
like "Headbangers' Ball", or more recently the show they did of electronic music videos. Some of those were very trippy.

Now it's just hour after hour of goofy "reality" shows, inane T&A videos with half the words silenced, and who knows what other mindless trash.

I used to stay up late at night watching that show. Most of my all-time favourite songs were ones I first saw on 120 Minutes.

27. Liquid Television was cool
lets not forget ren and stimpy first aired on mtv. I say it went downhill in 93-95 when it started being spring break, road rules and real world 24-7.
