Grow up in a small German-speaking immigrant community in Strasburg, ND, and you're maybe not going to hear a lot of English.
Horizontal blizzards and the long stretches of empty country out there in the western part of the state do tend to cut you off.
My people are all from North Dakota. Only we were in the southeast quadrant of the state. When we got lonesome for the big city, we could go to Fargo.
