I've been a Leon Redbone fan for decades.
.
Finally got a chance to see him live in a small theater-in-the-round. Opened for
Joe Walsh. Disappointed because, although I really like Joe Walsh, I LOVES me
some Leon Redbone. Amazing show - him on piano (I think), this GORGEOUS near-6-ft
fashion-model-looking woman playing incredible dobro... and this guy who was an
amazing multi-instrumentalist -- drums, tuba, trombone, maybe banjo and a coupla
others.
.
Fantastic.
.
But I was ultimately glad that he opened, as Joe Walsh came on and was just
hardcore rockin' AMAZING!!!!
.
Maybe my second-favorite show of all time.
.
Anyways, always had a fantasy of doing this song on stage with just a minimalist
tuba backing me up -- maybe making a fun dramatic production of it in a barroom
set.

.
I'm a bigtime sucker for 1930's blues and 1930's music in general -- always have been.

1. I'm envious! I LOVE Leon Redbone.
He's so smooth, so classy, while maintaining that funky charm. And he's so seldom around. I'd love more details, if you're willing.

14. He was ultra-laidback...
.
... cracked a few corny jokes, pulled out a starter's pistol at one
point and fired it into the air once just to wake up the crowd (no
need -- I'm pretty sure it's just part of his shtick). Amazing music
and amazing side"men" in his trio. I wanted it to go on forever.
.
His trademark white suit and hat and sunglasses. I don't remember
anything in his set list (not even if he played this, my favorite
song of his) -- I just remember there wasn't a bad one in the bunch.
.
I highly recommend seeing him if you have the chance -- almost the
epitome of a one-of-a-kind musician. Worth traveling some distance
if you have to.

2. Synchronicity moment! Leon Redbone popped into my head at work today....
I'm just standing there, minding my business, and suddenly
his rendition of "Shine On, Harvest Moon" was on the soundtrack
that plays in my head.

Probably the first time he's crossed my mind in 15 years.

3. Joe's better now than ever
Got off the sauce, after 30 years in a vodka bottle. Though in looking up clips on you-tube, when Joe played "Walk Away" with the Eagles, Joe sounded OK, looked great, but the Eagles sucked pond water as a backup band for Joe.
How was his band for this gig?
BTW - of the Walk Away covers clips I picked through, I liked Sheryl Crow's best. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV_v6kTd1pQ

16. He had a power trio and his two sidemen were amazing.
.
A drummer I wasn't familiar with (or at least I didn't catch his name) and "Rick the Bass Player" (Rick Rosas).
.
Rick the Bass Player's brand new bright red cowboy boots were introduced as the fourth member of the band.
.
The band was tight -- not a noticeable blemish through the entire show. I was pretty convinced then and now
that he hadn't given up one drop o' the sauce as of that show -- although it didn't seem to affect his music.
.
He had the ABSOLUTE GREATEST introduction for one of his songs that I have ever heard (or ever will).
.
"Here's a song I wrote once."
.
Joe had a guitar technician, to whom he kept referring/introducing as Julian Lennon (enough of a look-alike that
to this day, I'm not convinced that he wasn't) and a soundman who looked incredibly like Dan Fogelberg.
.
He finished the show with "I.L.B.T.
.
That's probably a story I'll post later.
.

4. We're seeing him next month
I had the chance to see him a long time ago in Birmingham, and couldn't get there for complicated, girlfriend-related reasons.

Then I had a chance to see him a few years ago here in San Diego and couldn't afford tickets.

Now, now I finally get to see him. I love all his stuff, but I particularly hope he plays "Border of the Quarter." I love that song.

5. Redbone has long been a "mystery man"
Edited on Sun Feb-21-10 10:50 AM by Bluzmann57
Fairly talented, but does anyone really know anything about him? I'm not disparaging the man, heck I saw him live a couple of years ago at a now defunct Blues Fest. You say he opened for Joe Walsh. A couple of weeks ago he was in this city playing a show with Leo Kottke. Now Walsh and Kottke are different types of music entirely. So Redbone runs the gamut, adding to his mystery man aura. Anyway, glad you had a good time.
edited for atrocious grammar

6. A classic singer if ever there was one.
I remember him from when I was a kid. I heard his voice in a lot of commercials and stuff. Glad to hear he's still alive! :applause:

10. my kinda music too
Although I include twenties with the thirties.

I saw Leon Redbone (and got the T shirt) about ten years ago. John Gill was with him, on banjo. It was low key -- I think Redbone was not feeling too well at that time. The fans were seriously loving it tho.

Think I'll pop a Redbone CD in the player right now. It's good Sunday morning music.

12. Saw him at the Armadillo in Austin
in the late 70's. I was leaning on the stage, puffing on a joint. Leon looked at me with amused recognition, without missing a lick.

20. I got to thinking about WHO might be a good act for Leon to open for...
.
... and Tom Waits came to mind.
.
Unique, one-of-a-kind, deep, remarkable voice, both FUN-FUN-FUN... difference
being that Leon Redbone is pure sophistication and Tom Waits is pure visceral.
.
That is my new fantasy line-up for a show, I do believe.

21. Saw Leon late last year, and it was awful.
He came on stage and just sort of bitched about the lighting and did a bunch of false starts to songs. I think he played 3 or 4 complete songs in an hour, one a repeat. No opener, no encore, no refunds.

I'd seen him probably 10 years ago and he put on a great show, and was hoping for a similar experience this time out, but it was just a shambles.
