I have a 2 part question for you to understand your moral values...
Edited on Thu Feb-18-10 05:09 PM by LynneSin
For $10,000 would you do the following:

Would you step on and kill a cockroach?

What if, instead of the cockroach I asked you to step on and kill a butterfly?

Please discuss.

I didn't know I could get paid for it. :grr:

1) Yes
2) I'd usually say no. But if I really needed $10K I'd consider it.

Rationale - not looks. Hygenic considerations.

I classify roaches as vermin... and vermin is to be dispatched post haste

However, I favor life for the butterfly... Not vermin.

I'll let the butterfly go for $5k, but the cockroach will still cost you ten grand.

10. It's not just looks/ick factor. Butterflies don't invade one's home, spreading
germs and aggravating asthma.

Butterflies are beneficial to pollination and harmless to your home, in addition to being beautiful.

Although I don't really like stepping/squishing anything, I'd definitely to it to a roach for $10,000. A butterfly, I don't know. I don't think I could.

22. The fly also invades homes, lays eggs that become maggots, and spreads
germs. If butterflies invaded my house, I probably wouldn't find them as charming as I do now. I remember when the ladybug population got really bad here in Chicago. I though they were super cute and all, but when they started getting out of control in my home, they lost a bit of that charm.

Butterfly ... it's not something I'd do for the heck of it, or even directly for your money. But after thinking about it, I would coerce you into donating the money to Doctors Without Borders instead of giving it to me. I would trade a butterfly for a bunch of children's lives.

I'd probably prefer going for the cockroach - not for the general reasons, but because nobody ever talks about "the cockroach effect" and I'd like to see if it sets off a typhoon in Asia that kills a butterfly, which sets off a hurricane in North America (yeah, I know, it's the fluttering of the wings --- the death bit belongs to time travel, but won't know without experimenting).

47. Wow! I read that book when I was about 10 years old (my brother was
a big SF fan and I read any book that entered the house), but I've never been able to remember the title or the author. It's been over 50 years, so it made a real impact on me even though I can't recall all of the details. I'll have to read it again now and see if it has the same effect. Thanks for jogging my memory.

44. I would expect that from you but....
I thought of this question after people got all repulsed about that Italian guy admitting he has had cat. I thought it was odd all these carnivore eating DUers were getting all repulsed and honestly - what makes a cat any more of value than a cow or a pig or a chicken?

I don't think I would eat cat. From what I've read it's not actually good quality meat to eat anyhows. But unless someone is a true Vegan, like you are, how dare they pass judgement on what this guy has done?

If someone is offering me that much money to do such a thing, they might not be in their right mind and I might be exploiting them by accepting the money.

BTW, I already stepped on the cockroach before the offer was made.

51. It would depend on how badly I needed the $10,000.
For example, if I needed the $10,000 to get medical treatment for a family member, then "Yes" to both questions.

If I was going to spend the $10,000 on something relatively frivolous, then "Yes" to only the first question. It wouldn't be enjoyable, but it would be worth it to eliminate a cockroach from this earth.

53. To the cockroach and the butterfly, their lives are worth more than $10k.
So no to both.

The human ego is funny. People only think from their own perspective, giving their value to others. It's really no different than someone taking $10k to shoot a person's mother. The $10k was worth more to them than the person's life. And before people get their panties knotted up their arses, I'm not comparing people to insects. That's for the ignorant to assume.
