1. I've always wanted to film an alternative to TOH, called

This Old House Effing HATES ME!

It would show all the cursing and general unglamorous back-breaking work that goes into remodeling.

3. Exactly
This old crapbox was built in stages by it's previous owners, none of which had any concept of level, square or plumb.

13. "Classic New Englander" a definition:
Built over a span of 50+ years, from recycled or substandard materials, by amatures, who drank heavily.

Then there were the payment terms for carpenters: "To be paid in good, hard cider, with half in advance."

As to GM's place - each section was likely somewhat level and sqyare as it was built - but the various boulders, stone, beams, and stumps used as a sort of foundation have settled, been heaved by frost, rotted, or collapsed.

5. +1
I call ours (143 years old) "This Old Shithole". Mr. MG does indeed fantasize about burning it down--must be a common sentiment.

What did your POS do to YOU?

6. Busted a pipe
Cold weather busted a pipe, no big deal, gotta fix it, goes with the territory. But, as usual, every time I open her up to fix one thing I get a good look at what else is wrong with it...this time I found a floor beam cracking I'm going to have to replace come warm weather. It truly never ends 

9. Doncha hate that?
Mr. MG and I have a running joke--every time one of us digs deep to do some sort of work on the house, it's inevitable--we'll utter "Oh my GOOOOODDDD..." because we've discovered more problems either around the small issue or--even more fun--turns the small job into a big-ass job.

This is our PITA after we had a shitload of work done on it this past summer and fall. We're not even close to being done.

15. Reminds me of my "starter house"
As time went on I would fantasize more and more about burning it down! Previous owners had left a trail of DIY incompetence. I'd take a lightswitch cover off, and a spaghetti-like tangle of wires would come out. None of the other houses in the neighborhood had a basement, because the ground was clay. However, some previous owner dug a basement out anyway, and it leaked despite the two sump pumps. It had a huge yard with a giant willow oak in one corner. Nice tree, but the leaves are too narrow to rake up. I was very happy to leave that mess.

16. Yep
Same here, this one was previously owned by in-laws who had no concept of doing proper repair work. When I bought it I was far more interested in the 3/4 acre it sits on than the house itself, I had planned to build a new house out front and gut the old house to convert into a recording studio. Oh well, the best laid plans....
