Fletch is a cult classic?
Fletch has become a cult film. In an interview for the New York Post, Bergman tries to explain its appeal. “It’s so bizarre, but Fletch strikes a chord. There’s a group of movies like that in the ‘80s, like Caddyshack, too, that captured a certain wise-ass thing.”<3> In particular, the film appeals to college students who have asked Chase to talk about it at film classes.<3> The actor has said that the appeal of the character is "the cheekiness of the guy...everybody at that age would like to be as quick-witted as Fletch, and as uncaring about what others think."<3> Chase has said that this film is his favorite to date because "it allowed me to be myself. Fletch was the first one with me really winging it.

And Left is Write.

We've done it before. Don't ask us to do it again. No, seriously, don't ask.

8. I didn't like it the first time I watched it.
But my friend kept quoting it all the time, and that was making me laugh my ass off. So I watched it again and it all became clear.

Dr. Joseph Dolan: Right. Now, how long have you had these pains, Mr. Barber?
Fletch: No, that's "Babar".
Dr. Joseph Dolan: Two B's?
Fletch: One B. B-A-B-A-R.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: That's two.
Fletch: Yeah, but not right next to each other. I thought that's what you meant.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: Arnold Babar. Isn't there a children's book about an elephant named Babar?
Fletch: I don't know. I don't have any.
Dr. Joseph Dolan: No children?
Fletch: No elephant books.

3. yet, "Fletch Lives" is one of the worst attempts at a movie ever...
I guess the same way "Caddyshack 2" is one of the OTHER worst movies ever...

I think in both cases, the originals were genuinely funny people improvising and goofing around, based on some minimal throwaway plot structure.

The sequels both tried to be something "spectacular" and probably didn't have an unscripted moment in them.

I just thank Gawd nobody tried to make a sequel to "The Blues Brothers" -- wait? What's that you say? No, that's impossible. John Goodman to replace Belushi? A cute kid? No... that could never happen.
