1. Why not both?
The book "2010" was better than the book "2001," IMO.

Movie-wise, I like both.

3. 2001 could be horribly boring.
There were times it just plain dragged, compared to 2010.

2001 was an innovative film, it took Sci-Fi out of the "monster of the week" genre, and appealed not just to stoners, but to Trekkers also.

2010 showed "We're not the big boss in the universe, so clean up your fucking act!"

5. The real Sci-Fi fans got it, better than the stoners.
2001: We're not the only ones in the neighborhood.

2010: And they don't think too highly of us, if we don't figure out how to survive, tough shit.

6. 2001 by a mile.
Part of the appeal is the mystery of what the film was all about.

2010 explained it all. :boring:

8. And if you read the novels

2061 and 3001, he just keeps on explaining and explaining until every last bit of the magic is drained from the story. Like Childhood's End, 2001 didn't require any further explanation. Clarke's Third Law is that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. We weren't supposed to understand it.

There before him, a glittering toy no Star-Child could resist, floated the planet Earth with all its peoples. He had returned in time. Down there on that crowded globe, the alarms would be flashing across the radar screens, the great tracking telescopes would be searching the skies - and history as men knew it would be drawing to a close.

A thousand miles below, he became aware that a slumbering cargo of death had awoken, and was stirring sluggishly in its orbit. The feeble energies it contained were no possible menace to him; but he preferred a cleaner sky. He put forth his will, and the circling megatons flowered in a silent detonation that brought a brief, false dawn to half the sleeping globe. Then he waited, marshaling his thoughts and brooding over his still untested powers. For though he was master of the world, he was not quite sure what to do next.

But he would think of something.

9. Kubrick tried to prevent anyone from making a sequel.
Of course he failed, so now we can count the ways that 2010 (the movie) is inferior to 2001 (the movie).

Where do I start?
