Poll question: Favorite nut
Seeing bins of nuts in the shell today reminded me. If your favorite isn't listed, please reply with your favorite.

2. Pain in the arse to get out of the shell
but so worth the effort :D

Next would be cashews, one of the strangest nuts out there :P

4. If you mean macadamias,
they certainly are. My neighbor has a macadamia nut tree, which flourishes here in San Diego, but it takes him 2 hours to shell one pound of the nuts in the shell, with a special cutter, one by one.

9. Well, the drawing there is of the cashew
and I call it "strange" because the "apple" fruit from which it grows, also has an oily substance like poison ivy, since it's related, too. It has to be heated to get rid of the oil before it can be broken open. However, the drupe (apple) can be eaten if cooked. Thus why I find it screwy for a tasty edible substance

so which were you referring to in the subject line of your post?

19. Well, since none of us can buy the cashew still in the drupe
and shell, I am referring to the Brazil nut as those are shipped still in their shells ;)
Sorry, I had to go back and look and didn't realize I never named it.

26. You're right...
Brazil nuts are tough to get out, especially in one piece. I don't know how they shell them commercially and keep the nut in one piece. I usually end up shattering them. Macadamias are even harder - they are like perfectly spherical rocks.

6. Because there are only 10 choices allowed and yes,
peanuts are legumes, and would be the only ones on the list that don't grow on trees and are considered annual plants. But I love them too, especially dry roasted.

12. I would pick cashews if they didn't try to kill me, so I went with pistachios.
Cashews are related to the Poison Ivy family somehow, and people who are highly allergic to Poison Ivy can develop a reaction to cashews. I can eat a handful and break out in a rash. They don't taste good enough to live through that. Close, though. Very close.

Has been since I was a kid. I love that bitterness mixed with creaminess. Plus I found a few years ago that they are a superfood and incredibly good for you. YAY!

24. Isn't that amazing? I remember getting a physical several years ago when I was
quite overweight (I've since changed my eating and exercise habits and lost 75 lbs). Anyway, I was surprised when my doctor said my cholesterol (both LDL and HDL) was "optimal" because high cholesterol runs in my family. I later realized it was probably my lifelong love of walnuts. I have to be careful about quantity, but I enjoy them at least 4-5 times a week.

40. All of the above except
chestnuts. Never had them until last year. Decided to order some from our co-op and roast them with some friends after hearing from so many sources how wonderful they were. None of the four of us could figure out what all the fuss was.

But really, if you want to get me to eat anything until I finish it, all you have to do is throw any kind of nuts into it and it's as good as gone. It's like I'm always searching for the next nut in whatever they are in.

43. I learned to like chestnuts while living in Portland, Oregon,
where they are grown commercially. About 25 years ago there were some street vendors who roasted them and you could buy them hot and ready to eat in a paper cone. They had a good flavor because they were roasted well. They are kind of an acquired taste and I wouldn't bother to get them and roast them myself, but if I ever come across them ready-to-eat again I would probably get them. I don't know if they have those street vendors. I also tasted chestnut soup once and it was good.

46. They are kind of rubbery.
But I think if they're roasted properly (probably over fire) they develop that charred, "almost-burned" depth of flavor that they don't have if cooked by other methods.

sadly, I can't have them at home anymore, as my daughter had an allergic reaction to them about 1 1/2 years ago that ended in a trip to the ER (she's much more allergic to Brazil nuts)
