"Width" is not the issue at the moment.

Smooth, silky fabrics, medium wide, solid colors are your safest bet right now.

The widest part of a necktie should be about as wide as the widest part of the suit lapel.

Opinions vary, of course and tie widths have varied greatly since I first had to wear one to work back in the early 1980's. They were wide in the 70's, got thinner and are now wide again. I have about 50 or so all purchased within the last 4 years and they are all between 3 1/2" and 4" wide at the widest point.

not the goddawful skinny tie, thank you. Narrower for social fancy dress, wider up to "normal" width for business fancy-dress.

So says the GQ...they're also recommending that we all start buying suits in manly fabrics again...rather than micro-weaved Italian wool, if anybody cares. I read it for the pictures of scantily-clad women, frankly.

And remember-prints and stripes are for solid color shirts. Solid ties are for striped shirts or coats with a pattern.
