11. Good advice for airline pilots too.
One time a severely drunken and violent passenger grabbed my tie.
He was so surprised when it came off in his hand I didn't have much problem 'restraining' him.
(Plastic tie 'cuffs')
:-)

3. so thin you cant see them
Monofilament wire, preferably.

What... if your going to make me wear a tie, I want to die of quick easy decapitation, not long slow strangulation. s'all's I'm sayin.

19. So it's the 60's again?
I've seen thin ties like those in fashion now on old episodes of Dragnet form the 1960s.

4. Actually, it's not the width of
the tie, but the tightness of the knot that is in question.

6. I collect "vintage menswear", and I own more than 500 ties.
"Width" is not the issue at the moment.

Smooth, silky fabrics, medium wide, solid colors are your safest bet right now.

13. Hate solids. Prefer rep stripes and paisleys.
Now I only wear a tie to weddings and funerals.
And not all of them.

7. A general rule of thumb (tie?)
The widest part of a necktie should be about as wide as the widest part of the suit lapel.

Opinions vary, of course and tie widths have varied greatly since I first had to wear one to work back in the early 1980's. They were wide in the 70's, got thinner and are now wide again. I have about 50 or so all purchased within the last 4 years and they are all between 3 1/2" and 4" wide at the widest point.

8. The current trend is towards slightly-narrow...
not the goddawful skinny tie, thank you. Narrower for social fancy dress, wider up to "normal" width for business fancy-dress.

So says the GQ...they're also recommending that we all start buying suits in manly fabrics again...rather than micro-weaved Italian wool, if anybody cares. I read it for the pictures of scantily-clad women, frankly.

9. Go into a nicer quality department store or men's store
like a Macy's or Nordstrom's or similar and see what the more prominently displayed ties are and judge from there.

12. take it one step further
look at the ones you like and make note of the manufacturers and prices. Then you'll know what a smoking deal your're getting when you buy them at Ross.

It's a mystery to me.

Edited on Mon Nov-09-09 02:41 PM by MissMillie
you've managed to avoid the fashion traps that women have fallen into

Pants w/o pockets
underwires
nylon panty-hose
spiked heels

I'd rather wear a tie... any day of the week.

As long as it's in the closet on the hanger with the suit (under plastic) since the last job interview - 9 1/2 years ago.

22. Wide enough to cover an aircraft carrier.
And remember-prints and stripes are for solid color shirts. Solid ties are for striped shirts or coats with a pattern.
