Miley Cyrus voted worst celebrity influence of 2009
http://www.reuters.com/article/domesticNews/idUSTRE59R22M20091028?feedType=RSS&feedName=domesticNews

I for one am horrified.

OK, I'm a 42-year-old gay male and I roll my eyes at the whole Hannah Montana thing, but whatever, you know? To each their own.

But worst celebrity influence? Is the kid snorting cocaine up and down Sunset Boulevard? Have I missed something?

The only thing I see worth mentioning is the "slant eyes" picture, which was obviously a mistake and for which she's apologized.

It just seems to me to be a horrible and hateful label that's completely undeserved.

1. Umm...
You know this was poll on a "website aimed at 9-15 year-olds," right?

2. Yes
which is now a story on Reuters, which is how I found out about it. You saw the link?

3. Yes, I saw the link
Doesn't change the fact that it was a poll from a tween celebrity site. Plus, what's the big deal if tweens think Miley is a bad influence? They're entitled to not like her.

4. If it had stayed a poll at a tween celebrity site, you might have a point.

But as I point out for the third time now, it's hit the national press.

ETA: And yes, people can be as vicious and as cruel as they want to be. Do you have a problem with me calling people out for being vicious and cruel?

5. People can be cruel to celebrities
but I don't think calling someone a bad influence is particularly mean. Compared to wholesome people, like Taylor Swift, I can see how Miley could be seen as a bad influence.

8. She's not being called a "bad" influence.
She's being called the "worst celebrity influence." Bad in certain respects, I can see. The "worst"? Not hardly.

6. Does Miley teach anything other than glitz and superficial glamour
(all corporate-owned and -designed)?

9. So far as superficiality and the concept of "something is wrong if I'm not a superstar", perhaps no.

10. You have no point.
Hannah Montana is about the precise opposite of the concepts you stated. Being "Hannah Montana" doesn't fix any of "Miley's" problems on the show. In fact, it frequently becomes an obstacle for her. So Miley isn't the poster child for superficiality at all. Quite the opposite.

And you are really reaching to avoid my point. Miley Cyrus is being called the "worst celebrity influence." The main reasons cited are the picture I referred to in the OP and some pole-dancing routine on an awards show. Meanwhile, Kanye gets a pass for being a drunken ass and Britney gets a pass after flashing her privates to paparazzi. That was 2008, though, wasn't it?

That's what I reacted to. There are far worse celebrity influences out there. Carrie Prejean and her breast-job-cheating, homophobe, Bible act, for instance.

11. At least the other hypocrites aren't corporate shills.

If corporations and their mindless produkt don't offend you as much as individual hypocrites, then indeed, we cannot have a conversation.

I feel dirty discussing such anathema and its bovine followers. Time to cleanse:

12. She is a good person
She does a kids show and it may not be the best but it's clean and entertaining. She does a lot for charity and many of concerts are for charity, for example, childrens cancer research. I know it's Twitter but during the Miss USA thing she made several posts speaking out FOR gay marriage and criticized Christians who used religion to deny equal rights to GLBT.

Plus her "controversies" are way overblown.

13. She stayed at the hotel I work for...
I went shopping for stuff for her room - mint gum, Lifesavers, etc.

She came in quietly and left the same way. The people who did have interaction with her said she was quite nice.

16. Well, she's had some issues with generating a 'grown up' image. It's tough these days to be
a female celebrity. The papers go after - or manufacture - news about them.

Look at the two reporters the Sun snuck into Susan Boyle's hotel specifically to provoke her. The folks that saw the incident - including the cop - agreed Boyle had every right to scuffle with them, but that's not how it was initially reported.

Women Behaving Badly has become a favorite and is why women dominate the most hated celebrities lists, while men dominate the most loved. Look at Posh and Becks. She's on the top ten hated and he's on the top ten loved. Why???
