Most Tense and Exciting Moments in Your Sports Watching Memory?
What were the most tense and exciting moments you've experienced in watching sports? (Start another thread for PLAYING sports, please). Ideally, they're moments that ended in success. For me, they both come from when I was younger:

1) Game Six, 1986 World Series(Mets v. Red Sox - I was thirteen, watching in my Queens apartment, Shea visible through our living room window. Not giving up hope. I was playing with a bicycle pump for good luck. Then...

2) Game Seven, double overtime, 1994 Eastern Conference Finals (Rangers v. Devils) - I was twenty, watching in my buddy's Queens apartment, sure that it was all over, until

Both are classic moments and calls in sports, and I remember both very distinctly in all their minute details. Weird how sports affects us, no?

How about you?

2. the "Bush Push" USC-ND game and the USC-ND game this past Saturday
Edited on Mon Oct-19-09 11:27 AM by charlie and algernon
both were insanely intense games.

Edit: I forgot to add the HS football game when my team snapped it's 19 game losing streak. It was my senior year in the band and we were begging the band director to let us rush the field with the rest of the students. The last 10 seconds when it became clear we had won were the only time I ever cried for a sporting event.

4. In person and on TV:
In person it would have to be Game 3 of the 2003 NLDS, Marlins vs. Giants. 11th Inning --with two strikes, two outs, bases loaded and Marlins down a run, Pudge Rodriguez singles home the tying and winning runs. The stadium goes absolutely nuts.

On TV: Toss up--1996 ALDS Game 4, Orioles vs. Indians--Orioles clinch the series in the 12th inning on a Roberto Alomar home run. I remember just pulling my hair out in that game, it was so back and forth. That was when the Orioles were good, believe it or not.

Also, 2003 World Series, Game 4, Marlins vs. Yankees--Alex Gonzalez (not a power hitter) sends a line drive just barely to the right of the left field foul pole and about a foot over the fence to win the game in a walk-off in the bottom of the 12th inning. I remember jumping up and down nearly as high as Gonzo had been. That was the game which was supposed to be Roger Clemens' last game until he decided not to retire after all.

11. I don't think I got much sleep that night.
Looks like this year will be the Yankees year. They'll defeat the Angels to get to the WS, I have no doubt, and I don't see the Phillies or Dodgers being able to beat them.

23. The Yankees are the team to beat, for sure.
But they have to still finish the job. I think the Phillies have more heart and will give the Yankees a tougher go, but Torre knows the Yankees inside and out, so that will be interesting to if LA gets there.

8. I remember going into the ninth inning having a feeling something good was going to happen.
That the Yankees dynasty would finally come to an end (and that a-hole Mike Mussina would be denied a World Series ring after he skipped town on the Orioles the past season). But it was just as sweet to see it all happen in person.

The Yankees had pulled out two or three of their WS game wins in the bottom of the ninth. It was ironic when they lost the 7th game in the bottom of the ninth.

6. The Cotton Bowl January 2006
Alabama beat Texas Tech as time expired with a field goal. One of the weakest kicks ever. Time seemed to shift into slow motion as everyone held their breath. The ball cleared the horizontal by mere inches.

9. That would be every time I sat on the sidelines coaching my kids as
they cheered out on the mat at competition. Believe me, this definitely is not about playing the sport because I feel as helpless then as my Dad does watching the Patriots fumble the ball at the goal line.

As for sports where I was strictly a spectator, would Kerri Strugg's Olympic vault with a bad leg count? I don't have all the details like you do, but I do remember feeling very tense and intent as I watched it all happen.

13. A South African marathon in 1989
I realize marathons are about as riveting as watching paint dry, but this one was special, and I was watching it on tv. A black (African) runner and a Coloured runner were neck and neck for the last several miles. Sports had only recently been desegregated.

One would pull ahead a foot, then fall back and the other would pull ahead. They really exhausted themselves being way ahead of the pack.

There was also a lot of political conflict and suspicion between Blacks and Coloureds at that time.

At the last minute as they approached the finish line, they both simultaneously and spontaneously reached out to each other, and grabbed each other's hands, and crossed the finish line at the same time together holding hands. The crowd erupted into cheers.

It was really breathtaking. I've never seen anything like it.

14. 2007 & 2008 Border War
Missouri vs. Kansas at Arrowhead Stadium. Both ended on Kansas' last drive. The first game, with the #1 spot in the country on the line for the winner, as well as a Big 12 North divisional championship. Kansas QB Reesing is sacked in the endzone for a safety, winning the game for the Tigers. It was so close until the end. I still have a picture of Reesing, sod stuck in the facemask of his helmet, the look of defeat clearly evident on his face, on my computer.

In 08, it was Kansas that won it, on a heartbreaking long touchdown pass to Meir, IIRC. Damn, that one stung...

16. The 1997 Rose Bowl

I was rooting for Arizona State, they were the #2 team in the nation going up against Ohio State. If they would've won they would've been AP National Champions. In pre-BCS times coaches were obligated to vote for the winner of the Sugar Bowl which under an agreement showcased the #1 and #2 in the country but since the Rose Bowl had a contract of Big 10 vs Pac 10 winner, Arizona State went to the Rose Bowl.

The other one is the entire 2008-2009 Playoffs, especially the Super Bowl.

The two things that are similar about the two.., as most of you know the Cardinals took the lead late in the game, Pittsburgh marched down the field themselves to eventually win the game. 1997 Rose Bowl was very much the same way. Jake "The Snake" slithered for a touchdown late in the game to take the lead but Ohio St marched down the field and Joe Germane hit David Boston with the winning touchdown with just 19 seconds left in the game.

Edited on Mon Oct-19-09 12:06 PM by JonLP24
Also has the largest comeback victory ever in College Football as well. Maryland trailed 31-0 at halftime to Miami(FL) with Bernie Kosar. Maryland and Frank Reich ended up winning 42-40. Though you may already have known that.

Edit/Michigan State broke that record with a 35 point comeback over Northwestern in 2006 but it's still very impressive for a QB to do that in both the collegiate and professional ranks.

19. Yes, Game Six '86, US-USSR hockey team on delay in '80. ODU women play USSR in basketball
in '80. Lost by ten points. THE closest game the Soviets had had in years. Nancy Lieberman, Inge Nissen and Anne Donovan for ODU. Semenova for the Soviets. Ovechkin's mother was not in the line-up that night.

When ODU tied the game on foul shots by Inge Nissen at the end of the first half it had 11,000 people screaming like I've never experienced since.

The biggest comeback in MLB History. Cleveland rallied to close a 14–2 deficit in the sixth inning to defeat the Seattle Mariners 15–14 in 11 innings. The Mariners, who would go on to win a record 116 games that season, had a strong bullpen too.

28. 1988 World Series, Kirk Gibsons walk-off home run in game 1
The Dodgers were heavy underdogs. Dodgers trailing by a score of 4–3, Mike Davis on first, and two out in the ninth inning, manager Tommy Lasorda inserted Gibson as a pinch hitter.

Gibson limped up to the plate to face Oakland's future Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley. Gibson quickly got behind in the count, 0–2, but received two outside pitches and fouled off a pitch to work to a 2–2 count. On the sixth pitch of his at bat, a ball, Davis stole second. With an awkward, almost casual swing, Gibson used pure upper-body strength to smack a 3–2 backdoor slider over the right-field fence. He hobbled around the bases and pumped his fist as his jubilant teammates stormed the field. The Dodgers won the game, 5–4, and would go on to win the World Series, 4–1.

It was Gibson's HR that propelled the Dodgers to victory in that series. I vividly remember because I was working on a long (2 years)consultant job in Houston, TX and was grievously homesick. Watching that game at Dodger Stadium was a welcome boost from home.

43. I have so many...mostly involving the Utes and Jazz.
But I'll just break it down to the most tense...

1997 Game Six WCF between the Utah Jazz and Houston Rockets.

Backstory: The Jazz had been the most successful Western Conference team to never make the NBA Finals. Year in and year out they'd get to the conference finals and lose. Either to the Blazers (1992), Rockets (1994) or Sonics (1996). Finally, in 1997, they held home court!

After going up 2-0, the Rockets tied the series 2-2 and Utah won Game Five in Salt Lake to send it back to Houston for Game Six.

The Jazz weren't favorites to win and most believed the series would head back to Salt Lake for a Game Seven.

After Utah fell behind by nearly double digits with two minutes left, it looked as if that would happen. Then John Stockton stepped up and put the Jazz on his shoulders. He scored...and scored...and passed...and scored.

The Jazz quickly erased the lead and the game was tied with 2.8 seconds left. Utah had the ball. Russell inbounded, found Stockton - who was wide open - and he sank the three at the buzzer.

Jazz win! Jazz win! They advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history. Though they'd lose to the Bulls, it was the most tense moment of my life. I nearly passed out waiting for them to inbound that goddamn ball. Then when the shot was made...I nearly keeled over in happiness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qobv8yUTJ_E

I still get teary eyed when I watch that!

2) 2009 Sugar Bowl.

I was a nervous wreck prior to it. The Utes weren't picked to win and many felt they'd lose in a blowout. However, they jumped on the Alabama Crimson Tide 21-0 and looked to cruise. The second half, though, started out horribly for Utah. They fumbled on their first possession and two plays later, the Tide scored a TD to get back into the game.

The rest of the second half was Utah pulling away before eventually winning.

But damn, that was a tense game. Greatest win in school history, but tense as hell.

3) Game Six 1998 NBA Finals.

This was an elimination game for the Jazz and they lost. But it was back and forth and probably one of the greatest Finals games in NBA history (it's the one where Jordan pushes off for his final shot).

I hated the outcome, but certainly one of the most tense moments ever.

There you go. I have tons more, but I won't list 'em.

2. 2002: Sale & Pelletier nearly getting robbed of their deserved gold medal due to crooked judging practices.

3. 2003: Michelle Kwan wins her 5th World Championships in Washington, DC. I saw this one LIVE and in person--from 5th-row center ice! :D

59. Sale and Pelletier at the '02 Olympics was one for me, too
Jesus, talk about a tense 4 minutes. I held my breath for every jump, throw and lift. They were just so perfect, though - brilliant choregrapy, and they skated it better than they ever had at exactly the moment when it mattered most. Seeing Jamie and David's reactions to their performance while they were still out on the ice made me cry.

Based on the judging of some of the previous pairs, I knew they weren't going to put them ahead of the Russians, but I was still pissed. I know they made up for it later as best they could, but it's not the same.

47. Ohio State Men's Hockey, 2004
CCHA playoffs against Ferris State, with winner moving on to the next round

We were being DOMINATED for 2 periods. It was 4-2 with 10 minutes left, when we scored shorthanded. We tied it up with 50 seconds left, and a freshman scored in OT to give us the win.

I lost my freaking voice that night; half the crowd had left at the end of the second, and the diehards and the band (where I was) were the only ones left.

Not a big thing in most people's eyes, but that was the most emotional victory I've ever witnessed.

48. "Defenses Rest as Packers Beat Redskins, 48-47" (1983)
I remember Lynn Dickey smiling pretty much from beginning to end. The players looked like they were having a great time.

"Some rather incredible numbers and numbness were produced in the highest scoring game in the history of Monday night football. Most impressively, there were 1,025 total net yards (a 552-473 advantage for the Redskins); 771 of those yards came by the pass. There were 56 first downs, 33 by the Redskins, and a staggering average of 9.1 yards per offensive play for the Packers."

I was a 'Skins fan back then and remember watching that game at my brother's apartment. The 'Skins lost two games that season, each by one point....and then really blew it in the Super Bowl......

When the current ownership either sells or becomes invisible, I'll probably head on back to the 'Skins.

51. Evans vs Bodine
Edited on Wed Oct-21-09 12:55 AM by Mopar151
Richie Evans spanked Geoffy hard at Monadnock Speedway (aka MadDog) with guts, grit, and desire - hit the frontstretch wall hard enough to throw sparks 3 times while winning the 100 lap feature. And the front row of the stands, where I was sitting, is only 10-12 feet from the wall.
Give the little sleaze his due - Geoff Bodine went on to win in Cup. He was a very good (if dirty) short track driver, and excelled at car preparation. His car owner (Dick Armstrong) bought nothing but the best, including Jack Tant engines.
But Richie was one of the best ever behind the wheel - absolutely phenomenal! Richie's sponsor (Gene DeWitt) had deep pockets, too - "But we don't beat him up!". No chrome, a road-worn hauler, and a cooler of Pabst Blue Ribbon was just fine for the "Rapid Roman" - but Gene bought good Hutter engines, and Richie had carte blanche at the tire truck.

That was only one battle in a long rivalry - check the link for another, better known chapter

84. Me too
But I think the last game of the World Series that year was even more surreal. I was watching it with my friend from Boston, and when we got the final out I started to tear up thinking that whole generations of Sox fans had gone their whole lives without seeing their team win, but I got to see the Sox get a ring when I was only 17. It didn't really seem fair to me.

57. Hockey at the 2002 Winter Olympics - Women and Men
The Games were in the US, and both gold medal hockey games were Canada vs. USA. In the women's, the Americans were the odds-on favourites (they had beaten Canada in their last 8 matches), they obviously had home ice advantage, and in a total bullshit move (in my humble opinion), an American referee was assigned to the game, though there were many qualified European refs. Anyhow, the Canadians found out before the game that the Americans had been keeping a Canadian flag on the floor of their locker room, and I think that made them mad. Canada won 3-2. I lived in an area of downtown that is dense with high rise apartment buildings, and I could hear the city celebrating, so I dug up a flag and wrapped myself in a red shawl and went out on to my balcony to hoot and holler with my neighbours (many of whom were out on their balconies) and passers-by.

The men's game was brilliant, too - more than one player said that they were inspired by the women's game. I heard my neighbourhood erupt again and again - when Canada took the lead 2-1 in the first, then when they made it 3-2 in the second, then in the third, when Iginla got the "security" goal, giving Canada a 2 goal lead and then when Sakic made it 3 goals. When that last goal was scored, making the score 5-2, I screamed, "That's GAME! That's THE GAME!" so loudly that my cat puffed up and ran under the bed.

Random fact from the game - forward Jarome Iginla, who scored 2 goals in the game, becam the first ever Black man to win gold at the winter Olympics. Not just the first in hockey; the first in any sport.

(I don't need to point out that I'm Canadian, do I? I think I made that pretty obvious, no?)

I don't think I watched a single game in the last month of the season, which is something that I didn't even do during the dark years...it was just too painful with all that wasted potential.

and now my worst baseball nightmare is on the brink of coming true, seriously who do you root for in a Phillies-Yankees series? Me, personally, I'm rooting for a freak post season strike. I need one of those Men in Black memory erasing devices to rid my memory of this year.

As for Phillips, what a sleeze, I'm glad he got caught

73. Being at the Giants/Redskins game Oct 7, 2001 was tense, the fifth game of the '83 WS was exciting
I was living in NY then, a DC transplant, the planes headed into Newark were flying low enough to clearly see their windows, and then all air traffic stopped.

The attack on Afghanistan started during the game and people with portable TVs were attracting more attention than the game........

I don't think it was exciting, but it was tense, just not so much for sporting reasons.

I drove up from DC to watch my once beloved Orioles defeat the Phillies in the 1983 World Series....that was exciting.

Tied at 6-6 in the 13th and the Rockies give up 2 runs to make it 8-6 in favor of the Padres. Bottom of the 13th comes and the Rockies knock Trevor Hoffman around and score 3 runs to win the NL Wild Card. I was jumping up and down and screaming in my apartment when the winning run "scored."

That one was good, as was Super Bowl 32 (when the Broncos beat the Packers for their first title), and the 2001 Big XII Championship Game when Colorado squeaked by Texas.
