My aunt hung herself Tuesday, and her funeral is Friday morning
My family just called me TONIGHT to break the news to me, despite the fact I'm scheduled to work Friday and and live 3 hours away. I can't skip work or my boss will have my ass, and I can't take any risks with work since I have a pregnant wife and house payments to make. If they would have called to let me know a day earlier I could have requested the day off in time.

Sometimes family just sucks.

4. What a country we live in....
you can't take time off from work to go to a funeral because your boss has you by the balls. This is so fucked up on so many levels. Your family does not suck, your work does.

5. (((NickB79))))
My sympathies to you and your family.

That is difficult news to break, and your family probably are having a difficult time breaking this type of news to you and to everyone else for that matter.

Really too bad about your boss and your workplace.

You will be with your family in spirit - they know that.

8. I was packing up my Grandparents to take them to the cabin
when out of the blue my friend called and said her father had a heart attack and died, Offered my condolences and took my grandparent's anyway..

It wasn't until I got back that I found out that my friend's father committed suicide and i was scum for not attending.

29. That is the lowest of the low...
Someone who gets on your case for not attending a funeral.
Or for doing something at a funeral they didn't like.

My ex called me up and chewed me out because I had a professional videotape my sister's funeral.

He wasn't there, he was on vacation with our daughter, so I knew he had spies at the funeral.

:wtf:

Also, after my sister was buried, her husband griped out my parents for spending "too much money on a mahogany casket". He sat there and approved of the arrangements at the time, of course.

:wtf:

:banghead:

12. sorry for your loss, sorry for your lack of notification
had the same thing happen just recently in my extended clan.
(notification wise).
when someone dies you feel helpless, it sucks.
when someone dies and you findout about it too late for you to even
attend the services---it just sucks more-you feel more helpless.
Vibes going out to your and your family today.

22. So sorry about your aunt.
Families may suck but in the end, they are the ones who stand by you. I used to live in the big city and missed a lot of funerals but I'd do what I could, send a card, make a call or do a good deed for someone, kind of like "Pay it Forward". I was a single parent back then and often couldn't afford the gas for the trip.I wish you blessings and a healthy new child.

24. I'm sorry. How tragic.
Death is never easy and suicide is always harder. Could you go over the weekend? Even though you'll miss the funeral, I'm sure people will still need to talk or perhaps some help with things. I'm sure you can find a special way of saying goodbye.

26. My deepest sympathies, Nick
I wish your family had told you earlier.

On several occasions, my mother didn't tell me about a death in the family until it was too late for me to attend the funeral. She always said it was because she "knew" I wouldn't be able to make the trip (I lived 400 miles away,) but I always thought it was her own passive-agressive way of insinuating that I should move closer to home. You're right--sometimes family sucks.

30. i'm sorry nick
my mom used to say, life is for the living

your first loyalty is to your pregnant wife

do not feel guilty

your aunt would understand, she's free now of all obligation, but she would understand that you are still earthbound

sometimes, yes, family does suck, and everybody's in a state of shock but never blame yourself for putting one foot in front of another
