DON'T call Rep. McDermott's EA "Liz"
Politico

OK, I can understand not wanting to be called by some commonly used form of your name. Would it really have been hard to reply and say, "I prefer going by Elizabeth, thanks" and leave it at that?

2. I'm on her side ALL the way. It's a familiarity she did not invite. It's a congressional office,

not a NY or London tabloid.

She has every right to be sensitive about stuff like that.

5. True. She went too far. But I'm stunned that someone like that would have
used the familiarity 'Liz' to someone that did not invite it. Someone from a congressional office.

I'll be honest with you, I was the only member of the Falopian Forest working in my office - a political polling firm. I can't tell you how often people started conversations with me "you're the office manager, aren't you?" "No, I write surveys and reports."

Yeah, it's a raw nerve for some and she did go too far. But I'm also stunned at the bad manners of the 'dear Liz' note.

Everybody, chill!

6. I agree with her.
Frankly, it bugs me when strangers use my first name, let alone a nick-name.

7. People who assume they can shorten other people's names are assholes and disrespectful.
That is a fact, and cannot be counter-argued.

And I have no idea what it is in American society now that everyone feels the need assume some sort of goddamn familiarity with everyone.

It pisses me off. I have a name that people shorten all the goddamn fucking time, and I hate it - that's not my name. Others like it; fine. I fucking hate it, and I ALWAYS introduce myself with my full name, because - well, fucking ta-goddamn-da, that's MY NAME. And invariably the jackass shitpiles respond back with, "Nice to meet you, (shortened-version)" and then I have to correct them.

Still, I never hammer them to death with correctives like this paranoid, self-important Elizabeth - talk about going over the fucking top! Holy hell.

9. Overkill on the correction but I agree with her main point
I hate it when people tag you with a nickname, especially in a professional situation. Totally disrespectful and rude.
