1. To watch or to set off?
I'm all for the former, but as to the latter...You'll shoot yer eye out!

8. Either/or
Keeps the discussion open-ended. :D

I enjoy fireworks shows, but haven't really been into setting them off in years.

The biggest downside, are people who insist on setting them off for weeks before AND after the holiday, at all hours of the night. :nuke:

3. One of my fondest memories of my childhood
was a rainy Fourth of July, and all the parades were cancelled, no big fireworks display.

We kids had gotten our usual stash of sparklers and worms and flaming cones, but it was raining.

And my mother took us into the garage, left the door open, and let us light them all. We put the fire cones on their sides, and watched them shoot out into the rain.

It is still one of the coolest things I think any mother ever did .................................

9. Oneof my earliest memories
4th of July in Tennessee, out in the country. My aunt bought me a box of sparklers and I was mesmerized by the blue flames. I can understand how cool that was of your mother - the best memories come from serendipity.

5. My youngest will be with my dad next weekend so we set a bunch off last night.
We had a fire, roasted veggie dogs on sticks, and had about a half hour fireworks display. We'll have another one on Saturday, but at least my youngest was here for this one. I keep a fully charged garden hose in close proximity to the discharge area and hose everything down afterwards. My neighbors think I'm anal retentive, but I prefer that to a grass fire. I'm cool with being anal retentive about that.

20. Good point.
One of my neighbors has friends bring up illegals from N.C. - stuff that explodes in the air. To his credit, he does walk the neighborhood the next day to pick up the casings and rockets, but he can't know where that shit is going to land while he's launching it. A few years back, he and the guy across the street from him were BOTH firing things into the air. A neighbor a few houses down had a mulch pile in his driveway and one of the things set it on fire. It melted the siding off of his house. Fortunately, the smoke alarm went off, they got out, and the fire department put it out before the house itself actually caught fire.

Stupid shit, that.

We decided to make July 4th our dog's birthday - everybody gets a holiday and there is lots of meat available for dogs to swipe or beg, and he is generally happy about it but he is afraid of the noise of the fireworks.

He will be 9.

When I lived in a small apartment in WA state for a few 4ths... our complex banned them, but that didn't stop the kids from going out in the street in front of the complex and blasting them for all hours of the night. I was thankful for the rain several of those years.

31. Leave them to the professionals
We are actually having discussions in south Texas right now about banning fireworks. We have the mother-of-all droughts going on, with record high temps and grass fires starting about every 15 minutes.

To me, in this situation, there should be NO discussion. The firefighters have asked that fireworks be banned within the city limits, and out of respect for them, if for no other reason, they should be banned.

Even if fireworks are banned, there will still be those individuals who set them off, cause fires, and all for what? A few sparkles and a pop?
To me, that's not worth someone losing their home to fire.

Under different climate conditions, I wouldn't be such an snot, but right now, we need to think about safety.

56. There is a time and place for everything
And from what you described, no one has any business with flammable explosives in a parched region. That is why many (but not all) fireworks are illegal in L.A. County - we're a fire waiting to happen in many areas. In fact, it was a firecracker that set off a major fire in the Hollywood hills near Griffith Observatory not that long ago. Some kids from out of town playing around.

As I said above, there is no such thing as being anal retentive about fire, and I would add, no such thing as being "a snot" either.

I use to go into Boston every year with my grandmother to see the 4th of July fireworks. We'd get pizza at a place that's now a McDonald's :( before and ice cream after it was over. Needless to say my brother benefitted from being her first grandchild and I for being her only granddaughter :D.

Setting them off is alright but it's not nearly as fun as going to see them.

I spent too many years living in a lakeside house where drunken idiots in nextdoor cottages spent hours (sometimes many night in a row) inadvertently coming way too close to blowing up their a) dock, b) boat, c) cottage, d) grandmothers (seriously--one lit firecracker zoomed under an old lady's lawn chair--that was a close one) and terrorizing our cats to be fond of DIY-ers. :eyes:

74. Last year, my wife and I bought a bunch of fireworks...
...and set them off at a lake deep in rural Texas along with a bunch of other folks celebrating July 4.

It was a magnificent, chaotic, beautiful event. The local fire department fenced off a good-sized field for us to launch whatever we wanted until midnight. People on the state highway got a really good view of the pyrotechnics, too. All you needed was a $5 wristband from the local fireworks booth and you were go for launch.

Aside from an errant Roman candle that came a little close to hitting my wife, it was awesome. We may do it again this year.

78. No, I just hate all the pollution generated by setting them off
and by their manufacture.

Now, if they were shooting them into thunderstorms in order to generate lightning strikes, that would be both useful and cool :D

81. Yeah I guess you're right.
I better find that old Indian used in those old anti-pollution TV commercials from the 70s and move in with him ;)

80. Bigtime "Yea"!
Fireworks are great. A complete and utter waste of money but great nonetheless.

82. Should be an option for "Hell, Yea!"
I love 'em. Unfortunately, my 16-year old autistic son HATES them. It's sad that it's not something the whole family can enjoy together.

89. +1 on this...
I don't get the point of household fireworks. It really is a non-event of a display. Professional firework displays are a lot better IMO. Some pros put some real imagination in their displays with ground displays as well as sky ones.

91. I love taking photographs of them...
Setting up kit 4 hours early...

Sitting there 4 hours...

Getting heckled...

When they start, people use their under-qualified cameras WITH THE FLASH SET TO "ON" to take pics... :eyes:

heading back to the car...

Seeing a victim of gang violence...

Being waved at by copy (to everyone) to drive around...

When going off the grass to the road, the car's undercarriage grazes the curb and everybody gawks at the noise, including the cops (nothing else better to do than to gawk? Maybe the attackers might be around, somewhere?? Never mind the victim; don't blame us for the noise since you bloody well told everyone to go in THAT direction like we were all told to do...)

I'll stay home and masturbate with an egg whisk instead; thanks all the same.
