As far as my state, I think Austin is the best city.

I have no idea which is the worst. I havent been to that many cities here.

Home of Mary Washington College and the Battle of Fredericksburg. Great history in the area as well as some cool vineyards. As a kid there was an authentic Japanese restaraunt that my family would go to there....sit on the floor and everything.

5. Just large cities, or all cities and towns?
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 12:49 PM by Tommy_Carcetti
As to large cities, I'm not sure which is best, but my favorite large Florida city is Jacksonville. A pretty, underrated city that's done a good job in making itself a more attractive place to live in the past few decades. My least favorite Florida city probably is Orlando. Don't get me wrong, there are actually some very pretty areas of Orlando with beautiful lakes and shady oak trees. But other parts, think International Drive, are just ugly sprawl central. One of the reasons I would never go to Disney World on my own is what that place did to Orlando.

As to all cities and towns? Best would have to be St. Augustine. I just love that place. Beautiful scenery, beautiful architecture, and right along the ocean. Worst? Probably Belle Glade or Immokalee--they are just depresssing places right out of the third world. It's sad that places like that exist in the United States, but they do.

I'll find even the "bad" cities have some very good things about them, and I love them for the character they bring.

Honestly, the only city I ever actually gagged at and found no value whatsoever in any of it was Las Vegas. That place is just a tacky craphole devoid of any intrisic culture. Sorry if I offended any Las Vegans, just my own opinion.

I think it's around there but he loved it. He used to get the daily paper for some odd reason and follows the high school football team, maybe he still does but he is a 24/7 alcoholic these days.

When you mentioned around Waco I thought you may have been talking about Groesbeck but I see that you already mentioned the town in question.

24. As a native Marylander, I know exactly what you mean.
There are parts of the city that look straight out of The Wire. But other parts are awesome, and the entire character and culture of the city is just terrific. Not to mention the crabcakes, the Orioles and the Ravens!

Although for worst of Maryland, parts of the DC suburbs are just suburban bleech IMHO. DC in general and all its traffic circles....I'm not a big fan.

Frankly, I'll take Capitol Hill anyday over any part of Baltimore. And it was a rather nice walk from Capitol Hill down to Nats Stadium. Where as where Camden Park is located..Meh. I like the aquarium/inner harbor and thats what..5 blocks of Baltimore?

26. Camden Park? Where the hell is Camden Park?
Oh, you mean Camden Yards, where the Orioles just took two out of three from the Natinals. 'Course, I shouldn't be bragging about that, seeing that the Duane's Towing Wee Bear Cubs of the Ottumwa (Iowa) Community T-Ball league could probably take two out of three from the Natinals.....

DC reminds me of another capital city. That being Baghdad. You have a sheltered, reasonably decent "green zone" in the middle of the city surrounded by square miles of hellishness you wouldn't .

Although I admit, as far as nausea inducing suburban sprawl homogeneity, the Maryland side isn't nearly as bad as the Virginia side. Right, Symarip?

Baltimore, of course, has the worst poverty and crime in the state. But it also has history, surprising good theater, a decent music scene, relatively, good restaurants, and a kitsch factor that gives it great character.

I'm not sure I have a worst, as Philly's the only city I'd live near in PA.

I used to live in MD (Frederick) and wasn't crazy about it; I saw that even now, Frederick County votes Repuke for President. Before that I lived in the DC suburbs, which were nice but have grown a lot. Baltimore is a nice city to visit. :hi:

37. There are no bad cities in Texas. Only bad Texans in Texas.
And most aren't bad, but the ones who are sure can make a big mess.

Best City: Austin, but it's not a landslide. San Antonio has a beautiful culture. Fort Worth is an ecclectic mix of cowboys and art galleries. Amarillo is bizarre and has beautiful natural scenery nearby. Galveston was and may one day again be a charming historical town with beautiful beaches (and some very dirty beaches, too). And that's not even getting into small towns like New Braunfels, San Marcos, Grapevine, Rock Wall, Kemah...

Worst city: I won't pick. None of them are bad, though most have some drawback.

90. Austin Sure As Hell Isn't As Nice As It Used To Be.

I went back last year for a high school reunion, and I was appalled at what had become of Austin. The place is bursting at the seams; it's as if everybody who ever heard about the "Austin experience" has moved there. Infrastructure has clearly not come close to keeping up with population growth, the interstate through the city is clogged to parking lot status at any given part of the day, and I hear that urban growth has permanently clouded the waters of Barton Springs. I grew up in Austin---2nd grade through graduation from UT---and the city was glorious back then; I didn't realize how good I had it during all those years. I am heartbroken at what it's like now.

Want to know how bad it was? I continued my trip after the reunion, and I found that the traffic in Houston was better managed and easier to deal with. Houston traffic better than Austin traffic.I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that things would reach that point.

My vote for best city in Texas? San Antonio, followed closely by Ft. Worth. Or some place smaller in the Hill Country (away from Fredericksburg's inflated real estate prices).....

115. Traffic's not that bad, you must have come at a weird time.
I can drive on the interstate without any trouble most times except rush hour, except for one hour south where they are doing roadwork.

As for Barton Springs, it's the drought that's killing it. There's very little water flow anywhere around here anymore. The Pedernales is dry, the Colorado would be dry if it weren't dammed, and the lakes from Buchanan on down are 30 feet below normal and have been for years. The only reason Town Lake is full is because they control the dams to keep it full.

Every city in Texas has grown in the last ten years. San Antonio has the same problems as Austin, Dallas has become a monster, Houston is spreading so far east and west they are constantly rebuilding the interstate and highways. That's just life.

98. Well, here's the thing.
You really can't think of Miami as being part of the south. You have to think of it as part of Latin America. The only place in Latin America where the power usually stays on all day long, and the only place in Latin American apart from Belize where English is spoken fluently. So think of it not as the hellhole of the south, but the northernmost party city in Latin America. And, viewed in that light, it is a lot of fun. Don't get me wrong - I don't live there any more. But I do visit several times a year for several days at a stretch. I indulge in what the city has to offer, and then I leave.

79. For California, I would choose:

Best: I would probably pick Santa Cruz as the overall best. Everything southern California tries to be and fails. Cool, comfortable climate. Beautiful redwood forests. Also very liberal, great scenery, great university, great culture, not far from San Francisco, Yosemite and the Sierras, Monterey, Big Sur, etc. I don't know what the cost of living is though, that could be a deal killer.

Worst: Bombay Beach. Not on the coast - this is a dump that some people actually live at, on the eastern shore of the polluted Salton Sea in the lower desert of Imperial County. Extremely hot there half the year, smells bad, nothing to do whatsoever. Why is it even there, let alone have residents? Apparently 366 people actually call it home. Worst place I have ever seen. Only Gila Bend, Arizona can compete with it.

120. To be fair, I have had some fun in Imperial County,
during the late fall, winter and early spring the weather is mild and comfortable, and there are vast areas of dunes that you can ride around on using any number of vehicles like dune buggies, dirt bikes, ATVs, etc. That's mainly centered around Glamis. And the area between Glamis and Blythe is kind of a picturesque, unspoiled desert. But that's about it. I could not live in Imperial County (or Riverside or San Bernardino counties either for that matter). And the Salton Sea, which 50 years ago was considered a glamorous resort, was such a huge disapointment that I will never go there again. Dead fish and foam at the edge of the water, empty roads where they had hoped homes would be built, intense heat... why on earth would anyone live there?

This isn't your father's industrial, papermill Jacksonville. I'm telling you, it's actually become a very pleasant city to visit and live in. Still rather conservative? Yes, but becoming less and less so (Obama nearly won Duval County in 08).

Not to mention Jacksonville Airport is bright, airy, unclutterd and one of the nicest you'll fly in or out of:

I actually feel relaxed if I'm flying in or out of Jacksonville. Not many large city airports can do that for me.

Do I sound a bit like the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce here? Perhaps. But I like it more than I like any other of Florida's large cities, and that is saying a lot, because all of Florida's large cities have something good to offer.

87. This is a tough one for me to answer: Arizona
I haven't lived in a lot of cities or towns here but have driven through quite a few small towns I wouldn't live in but I'll leave that out of the equation. I never been to Tucson so don't be suprised if I don't mention it. I would say Mesa is the worst but I lived here most of my life and do have friends. Still I say it is the worst. I'd say Flagstaff is the best but there is nothing to do over there, atleast I can find stuff to do here in Mesa and unlike Flagstaff you don't have to walk 10 blocks to find a convienent store. However I say Tempe is the best town in Arizona. Mesa or most likely Apache Junction is the worst but I haven't lived in AJ but I'd rather live in Mesa then AJ. Tough question for me to answer so here it is, final answer. Best: Tempe, Worst: Apache Junction but I haven't been a lot of places here.

I went to rehab there in fact at the hospital on the top of the hill adjacent to the park if you are familiar with the area. There are locals that were at the rehab and told me much about the town. Down the hill and towards the east is a section of abandoned buildings that they called 'felony flats'. I've only lived there a week or so and I noticed there is quite of bit of drug abuse that goes on, someone walked from the felony flats area and asked an NA member right before a meeting on asking him for drugs. The member in fact directed him to the meeting but the guy turned him down and keep walking. An interesting tidbit it is where Kurt Cobain is from.

130. Based on what Wiki tells me
By 1900, Aberdeen was considered one of the grittiest towns on the West Coast, with many saloons, whorehouses, and gambling establishments populating the area. Aberdeen was nicknamed "The Hellhole of the Pacific", or "The Port of Missing Men", because of its high murder rate. One notable resident was Billy Gohl, known locally as Billy "Ghoul", who was rumored to have killed at least 140 men. (Gohl was convicted of 2 murders

It goes on to say the era of the great depression hit the area hard.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberdeen,_Washington

I forgot to mention it is the only place I ever been to and that includes Tacoma, Lakewood, Ft Lewis where I lived 2 out of 3 years where it is always cold in the summertime. It occasionally had a few warm days but it was always cold.

131. Heh, that sounds like every town in the Pacific Northwest
Portland has a whole network of tunnels running under it's old downtown that was used for the purposes of kidnapping drunks and other unsuspecting victims and selling them into service on sailing ships.

Seattle's second-biggest industry in its early days (after logging) was prostitution. Much of this took place in little huts built on stilts over the tidal flats now occupied by the seaport (and the sports stadiums). So if you were unlucky enough to fall asleep afterward, you were not only likely to be relieved of any valuables, but would wake up in stinking wet mud.

For a while, almost all of the city budget was run, not by taxes on the legit businesses, but by "fines" collected from the brothels. This lasted until the other businesses started to realize that this gave the brothel owners a lot more political power than they were happy with, and they voted to tax themselves.

Not so much of what you said but they explored an underground speakeasies(spelling?) near Seattle or possibly within city limits. I can't quite remember where based on location. 135. There is an underground part of Seattle (underneath Pioneer Sqaure)
which was the original city. After the city burned to the ground in the 1880s, they decided to rebuild the city one level up, for a variety of reasons, but in large part to allow for better sewage engineering for the newfangled "water closets" that were starting to come into use (Imagine having to consult a tidal chart every time you flushed your toilet, or risk flooding) And yeah, there was plenty of illegal activity going on down there after the lower areas were abandoned.
