I just killed a brazillion ants in the bathroom
I don't mess with pesticides so I scooped them up by hand and flushed them all. I feel dirty.

Two questions.
Why would ants invade the bathroom and how do I keep them away ( there is already an ant cup in there)?

Am I going to hell for my massive slaughter?

3. I always wanted to be famous and in the history books.
Who knew it would be because of my borderline genocidal actions.

5. Is there some type of sugar-based substance in there?
They are attracted to sugar and syrupy stuff. Sugar body scrub perhaps?

8. They are hanging around the base of the toilet
Everyone in my house has pretty sensitve skin, the only thing that may attract them is my moms almond body butter, but that is in the shower.

24. How big are they? If they're carpenter ants, you need to call a professional
Not an exterminator necessarily, but a plumber. They're attracted to water from leaks. http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/housingandclothing/DK1015.html

26. shit looks like it might be a carpenter
they weren't very big, so I wasn't worried......but maybe they are lower cast workers. We also had a leak in the bathroom six months or so ago.......damn it

7. Sprinkling cinnamon around their point of entry will repel them
I don't know why cinnamon repels ants, but they hate it.

11. I always feel bad killing an ant...
I don't know why. I had one of those big carpenter ants in the shower once. I didn't touch it but I let it go down the drain. And then I felt guilty! But I told myself he'd wash out alive somewhere like they do in the animated movies. :D

14. How to Get Rid of Ants Safely and Without an Exterminator
How to Get Rid of Ants Safely and Without an Exterminator

First, pick up some boric acid powder (available at most drug stores) and mix a small amount of it 50:50 with table sugar. There’s nothing particularly scientific about this ratio, so it’s fine to just eyeball it. Next, put some of this mix into a small container such as the the cap from a milk jug or the lid from a 2 liter bottle. Finally, drizzle some water into it to make a slurry (i.e., a thick suspension).

Once your concoction is ready, simply set the mix in the path of the oncoming ants (they usually form a foraging trail) and then wait. At this point it’s important to be patient and not kill any of the ants yourself. The reason for this is that you want them to take your tasty treat back to the nest with them. Boric acid is toxic to ants, but it doesn’t work immediately. As such, you need to let them forage and then take it back home to share with their nestmates — this will ultimately wipe out the entire colony.

This really works, but you have to add the mix, or mix in water, because they are looking for water if they are in your bathroom. It does take a few days for the next generation to be fed and killed.

18. I changed the cut & pasted internet instructions>>> better container
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 05:06 PM by marzipanni
I was at the library using a PC, and am used to a Mac, but my 'copies & pastes' were reverting, or otherwise misbehaving. ;).

I wanted to change 'two-liter bottle cap' to 'flat plastic tub lid'- you want a large, shallow puddle so as many ants as possible can gather
'round and nom the bait....for as long as none are seen.

Fill it with half sugar and half 20 Mule Team Borax. Squirt the mixture around doorways, cracks, windows and any other ant entry points. Problem solved.
