merit.

Examples: Every bit of classical music Stanley Kubrick ever used in a movie, including Beethoven's Fifth ("Clockwork Orange"), every piece in "Barry Lyndon" and obviously Thus Spake Zarathustra in "2001".

A number of Mozart pieces that were directly used in "Amadeus" and which I was so young that was the first time I heard them.

1. "10,000 miles" by Mary Chapin Carpenter from Fly Away Home
The flute music that accompanied much of Rain Man.

The interesting instrumentals from Erin Brockovich that accompanied scenes where she drove in the Mojave Desert.

2. Schubert: Piano Sonata No. 20 in A: D. 959 II: Andantino
is so tightly woven into Robert Bresson's "Au Hasard Balthazar" that it almost seems like it was written for it. I can't hear that without scenes from "Au Hasard Balthazar" popping into my mind.

5. Extreme Ways - The Bourne Trilogy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U-7DJFgooU&feature=PlayList&p=5F7B85C4C9D3D488&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=53

Extreme ways are back again
Extreme places I didn't know
I broke everything new again
Everything that I'd owned
I threw it out the window came along
Extreme ways I know will part the colors of my sea
'Perfect color me'

Extreme ways they help me
They help me out late at night
Extreme places I had gone
That never seen any light
Dirty basements, dirty noise
Dirty places coming through
Extreme worlds alone
Did you ever like it planned?

I would stand in line for this
There's always room in life for this

Oh baby, oh baby
Then it fell apart, it fell apart
Oh baby, oh baby
Then it fell apart, it fell apart

Extreme sounds that told me
They held me down every night
I didn't have much to say
I didn't give about the life
I closed my eyes and closed myself
And closed my world and never opened up to anything
That could get me at all

I had to close down everything
I had to close down my mind
Too many things caught me
Too much could make me blind
I've seen so much in so many places
So many heartaches, so many faces
So many dirty things
You couldn't even believe

I would stand in line for this
It's always good in life for this

Oh baby, oh baby
Then it fell apart, it fell apart
Oh baby, oh baby
Then it fell apart, it fell apart

Oh Baby, oh baby

Oh baby, oh baby

Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby
Then it fell apart, it fell apart Oh baby, oh baby
Then it fell apart, it fell apart
Oh baby, oh baby
Like it always does, always does

10. Jacques Offenbach, arranged by Raymond Leppard,
for a mostly-detested adaptation of the John Irving novel "The Hotel New Hampshire."

Recorded with the London Philharmonic.

I had no clue this was classical music until I saw the movie and had the thought: "Wow, that music is amazing."

The Swedish film, "Elvira Madigan" (1967), is seldom seen today but in it's time the movie and music were very popular. It's still sometimes referred to as The Theme From Elvira Madigan.

20. The Ronettes, "Be my Baby" from *Mean Streets*
As Harvey Keitel's head is laying down, just at the dawning, the song comes on: "The night we met I knew I, I needed you so / And if I had the chance I'd, I'd never let you go." The screen switches to home movies. Scorsese simultaneously pwnd that song and sealed his fate as one of the pre-emanate filmmakers in America.

It's a hopeless moment for the viewer. My husband was "in country" for 14 months, thankfully he was largely untouched. His biggest problem was coming home not knowing why he was there in the first place, and coming home to a gung-ho WWII vet of a father who thought all Vietnam vets were losers. My heart breaks for all veterans of that unnecessary war, whether they were scarred or not...just as my heart breaks for the vets coming home today.

With cable/satellite TV and their seven billion channels, I almost never see the beginning of a movie anymore unless it's on DVD. 66. Not in a GOOD way: the theme from M.A.S.H. Downright ANNOYING.
There's not much call outside of the movie/series for lyrics like, "Suicide is painless."

The best, original movie music is ACCOMPANIMENT to the thing as a whole, nearly inconspicous. There is nothing worse than the John WILLIAMS crap that booms itself out, especially with the sound levels at the plexes.

Scads of classic movies have wonderful whaddayacallum, music-scripts (that's not the word), minimalist and silence, punctuation of mood and theme.
