Yeah, I'm a little nervous (I've never been through this). Has anyone ever had anything go wrong. What do I look out for? Do I need to do anything special for them?

1. You especially need
A good vet. This procedure is very close to the urinary tract. Be sure the doc cuts carefully, lest you end up with bladder problems.

I got my kitty fluids and a pain shot to go along with the spaying, but I've had kittens that didn't receive this and did just fine.

Afterward, try (try) to keep them a little inactive. Mine was jumping on the couch the next day.

3. I never had a cat spayed
but have had two female dogs and it is major surgery. They were quiet the first day or so and in pain. They can't jump or run around for a few days and watch that they don't pull at the stitches. Mine didn't but sometimes they have to wear one of those funny looking collars so they don't lick or bite it. I don't remember for sure but I think they had an antibiotic to take. Be prepared for lots of lap holding. When the males were neutered they came out of it like nothing happened, just glad to be home again.

4. Are they male or female?
I just had my mama cat and her two baby sons spayed and neutered. Be sure you have a cat carrier to take them to the vet in. It'll be far less traumatizing for them.

The baby sons were themselves the next day (they stay at the vet overnight so be prepared for that.) The mama cat had a more difficult time and it took her about a week to get back to normal. Make sure to put her water and food close to where she is and allow her to get plenty of rest.

5. Cats recover so fast it's awe-inspiring
It's incredible. They'll be up and walking around within an hour or so after the surgery. They will be spaced out from the drugs and might be in some pain - ask the vet to give you a couple torbutrol or something similar in case they seem to be in a lot of pain. DON'T let them climb stairs or jump on or off furniture for at least a couple of days (that includes the bed). If your vet uses isofluorane for the anesthetic, the spaciness wears off fairly quickly, but if the vet uses Ketamine, their pupils will be enlarged, they'll be high as kites, and they may act very odd for a bit.

Watch for any redness, soreness, or draining around the incisions. Chances are, they'll be just fine and back to normal within 2-3 days.

Oh, and it's not unusual for it to take some time for the belly fur to grow back. Congratulations on doing the right thing for your pets.
