Really, what is the purpose of mosquitoes?
They must serve a purpose of some sort. I think they are completely useless and should be destroyed. I know they feed birds and stuff, but there are other bugs to eat on that are much less annoying.

1. They serve as proof of God's nonexistence.
because no creator worth their salt would create such a useless creature.

I'm talking of mosquitoes, not us humans btw. ;)

3. Ever see the movies Night Watch or Day Watch?
They're Russian vampire movies, an the vamps go into this netherworld called The Gloom, where they're mosquitoes.

Haven't looked at the bugs the same way since. :)

5. Have not seen that one! Maybe a good thing too.
I already feel like the mosquitoes around here are miniature pterodactyls.

19. They ain't devils they're LESBIAN VAMPIRES !!!11!!11!!1!
The mosquitoes that bite are females, and they use the blood to fertilize their eggs. Male mosquitoes are vegetarians.

9. Try the Mississippi Delta in the summer.
I don't know if it is the river or what, but all I can say is DAMN! The mosquitoes there can pick your ass up and carry you somewhere else. There are that freakin' many of them, and they are BIG mosquitos.

11. Yep!
A mosquito truck has gone by my house twice tonight, and I am noticing a small difference.

I complain now, but when I first moved to Jackson, I didn't think they even had mosquitoes because I was so used to those delta mosquitoes. I am going soft. I need to revisit the delta to remember why it isn't so bad in Jackson.

16. Delta mosquitoes and coast mosquitoes are the worst. They killed Jane Mansefield, you know.
Well, she ran into an 18 wheeler stopped behind a mosquito truck... Right down the road from where I grew up at the time. I think I mention that about once a week, though.

Skeeters do, after all, carry nasty things like malaria, etc.

Don't piss off Gaia. She just *might* mutate HIV, et al to
be spread by insects rather than hominids. Just sayin'.

21. The Delaware Indians (Leni Lenape) say they are created by the devil
Unlike most beings in Creation, they were created by the Evil Spirit, Machi Manitoo, instead of by the Great Spririt, Kije Manitoo. They have only one purpose for existence, and it's bad. I have to agree!

22. There is no purpose to anything living. Something lives if it can
Mosquitoes live because they can and because they are good at it. If they start sucking at living, they will go away.

They got off due to a loophole, so probably the same for the flying creatures ;)

24. To remind me of Christ's suffering on the cross
Okay, a little bit too Catholic there. But that's all I can come up with. as they cause me to suffer from May-Sept. when I would most like to enjoy my yard, especially during the early evening hours. Here in Alabama, they can be like little buzzsaws on the human skin and they really seem to love me particularly (oh joy, I'm loved by something).

36. water quality....
To the extent that any organism has a "purpose," I suppose it's purpose is ecological, i.e. it provides some important ecosystem services. One of the services mosquitoes provide is filtering microbes from water and repackaging microbial biomass into a form that's accessible to larger predators, who eat the mosquito larvae. They're an important component of many aquatic food chains.

Feel better now?
