100 days to FUNDAY X !! Did I mention the FREE BEER??
That's right -- there's FREE BEER for everyone who can make it to FUNDAY X, June 19 in Saginaw, Michigan! Polly and I (and Annie and Carl and Andy the Right Wing Republican and all the rest of us) are looking forward to meeting up with all you fine DUers at the annual party, now in its tenth year.
We feed you, too -- and can even find lodging for anyone who's doing this on a budget. All you gotta do is get here -- split the gas cost and bring a carload...I'll buy the beer for all of you.
Now, is that a deal or what? RSVP if you're coming, if you want more information or if you can bring the potato salad.
John

2. Well, I don't want to make a pest of myself about it
Aw hell, who am I kidding? It's about all I'll talk about between now and June. I'm (nearly) certain Kheph is coming up from Indianapolis and I'm (nearly) sure that Davsand will be coming from eastern Illinois (399 miles). If we could get a carload organized from the Buckeye State, too, that would be really cool.
MSchreader will be here from Detroit (that one I'm confident about -- he's only missed the first one, in 1995), too. I know everyone can't make it -- but a dozen or so DUers would be great.
I'm buying the beer -- or did I already mention that?

3. Checking in
John, did you want me to do a section of FUNDAY RADIO this year?

5. Sure -- if it's no problem
Do you have anything in mind particularly? Since this is the tenth anniversary, maybe you could host Marty's Big Red FUNDAY Cavalcade. Andy the Right Wing Republican should be dropping by in the next couple of hours so we can head over to his house and start cutting chunks out of the previous seven FUNDAY RADIO programs. I'm still not sure how we're going to cobble the whole thing together (I'd like some continuity, as opposed to a dog's audio breakfast).
I don't have Andy's email address handy (he changed it awhile ago and I never asked him for the new one) -- he only lives eight blocks from here so we just use the phone or he comes over bearing beer. But I'll get it from him this PM and send it to you. Chip is doing the final assembly, and I've already sent you his addy.
Give me some suggestions. My poor brain isn't working up to its usual high standards this afternoon.
John
If you could burn some commercials down there...you know most of the sponsors -- Fast Lane, Beirut Fencing, Uneedakat Cat Corporation, Snip and Dale's Lounge, Yum Brand Cigarettes (and menthol Tastees) and send them along or, better, come up to Saginaw soon with them, that would be swell. Keep this kicked.

7. That's what I was thinking
"The Big Red FUNDAY Cavalcade", aka "WEVD on FUNDAY RADIO". If I can get a time slot that starts just shy of the top of the hour and goes to the top of the next hour, that would be oh-so-cool. (I've been thinking about what I wanted to do for this over the last couple of weeks.)

I want to tap the assist of a few DUers for some of the spots, like a leftie news update (with humor, of course!), some promo spots, etc. I'm also looking to get you some "special" promo spots that you can drop in here and there.

I'll do a few of the listed commercials (with a left/humor twist, of course), and maybe one or two of my own.

Let me see when I can make it up there next.

Martin

8. A little politicking is okay -- blatant politics is not
Like I need to tell you that -- politically, the FUNDAY guests run from the left of Eugene Debs to the right of Alley Oop. You know the drill -- leave the attitudes at the door but, still, it IS an election year.
And, since final assembly of the FUNDAY RADIO pieces isn't sked'd for another seventy days or so yet (though Chip will be the final arbiter of that), we'll have lots of time to get it just right.
Which reminds me -- if anyone here has some great Dopey clips, where he says stupid, embarrassing stuff (like that's a stretch), PM me for my addy -- we'll build some campaign ads. I'd guess that goes for John Kerry, too.
John
Trying to be fair, gracious and magnanimous here. For a change.

9. That's FORTHRIGHT, gracious and magnanimous
Like I really have to tell you that!

No, I wasn't going to make overtly political. Just music and stuff that lefties laugh at. Any chance at doing an ad for the Michigan Socialist, though?

10. A Michigan Socialist ad
Why, sure. Absolutely. As long as you let me write it.
While we're on the subject of fair play, I suppose I'll have to write one for Andy, too. Let's call it "The Fascist Reactionary Quarterly."
John
Andy got laid-off yesterday, BTW. First, rather than the $26/hr he was making under Clinton as a pipefitter, he was down to fabricating metal bits at $14 per. Now he's on unemployment (for 13 weeks) and is REALLY getting pissed about -- wait for it -- Bush's economy.
You know how he is -- we can't tell him anything bad about Dopey but, given just thirteen more weeks, we might not have to. Stay tuned.

13. Go for it
As long as I get to do the Fast Lane ad.

Seriously, though, go ahead and do the copy on the Michigan Socialist ad. That should be fun.

14. "We'd like to remind all our FUNDAY listeners...".
"At the FAST LANE Drive-Thru Party Store, Carl EXPLOITS his workers and passes the savings on to YOU!"
Ah, when you get up here, we'll yank the old ads out (they're on their own CD) and you can have at it. Maybe we could even get Carl to cut some vocals for us -- with that voice of his, they'd be a Instant Comedy Classic.

17. Exactly what I had in mind
With one addition: Every commercial we do should end with, "My name is XXX, and I approve this message." After all, it's an election year.

22. OK, I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not
But then, I've only had about five hours of sleep this week. So, right now I can't tell if I'm smoking a cigarette or eating dinner. Take it as you will.

23. First, I was waiting for the Joe Pesci response from "Goodfellas"
"What do you mean I'm funny? How am I funny? I'm some kind of clown here to amuse you? What the fuck do you mean I'm funny?"
Okay. As for the cigarette/dinner dilemma, bite down on it. If it tastes like shit, it's a cigarette. Or bad takeout.
John
Who had yummy ribs for din tonight, courtesy of Polly, and is currently enjoying a delicious death nail.

6. Well, that happens every year
We have to pick a date -- and that date is always going to conflict with someone's schedule. For example, the incomparable Liz Bierlein (one of my favorite people in the whole wide world), will be attending a friend's AIT graduation at Fort Leonard Wood, MO and can't make it this year, either.
Here's hoping your sked clears or that you can make it next year. It would be great to meet you.

Maybe we can figure something out. A Greyhound, hopping a freight, carjacking someone -- something. We'd sure love to have you here.

16. Hey, that'll work!!
Stop in Illinois and pick up Davsand, then to Indianapolis and grab Kheph and come on up! They already know where Saginaw is, having been to previous FUNDAYs.
Like I've said, we can provide lodging (really really nice lodging), food and beer -- and I'll give you the deluxe, nickle tour of THE BUS (did I mention I have a BUS?). A 1963 International Harvester with the rounded top. Seven tons and 29 feet eight inches long. Named "Social Embarrassment." It'll be here for the party.
Marty (MSchreader) has a bus, too. So, there'll probably be TWO buses here at the soiree. And Andy the Right Wing Republican will even let you drive his bitchin' Camaro if you talk nice to him (yes, there reallly IS an Andy the Right Wing Republican).
Well, think about it. Just think about it. I can DUmail you my regular email addy and phone number if you need it.

21. I'm looking forward to a big metropolitan Detroit turnout
There are a few Detroit-area DUers (Az, Scout, noonwitch) who I've met, but who have yet to make FUNDAY (we've met at my birthday parties -- which I come to Detroit for), and others (you and Tahiti Nut, for example) who I haven't met at all.
I'm waiting for some of the DU/FUNDAY veterans (mostly listed in my sig line) to come on here and give some glowing reviews about the party, but I'm not going to beg. I'll save that for the last fifty days or so.
Looking forward to meeting you, Mrs G. Feel free to bring Mr Grumpy, too.
