The After Midnight Poetry Thread

Reading

I crack the new spine and sit; evening, late summer;
The pages like a new language I can barely translate, all

Fumbles and cuts and rubs, the characters resist
Decoding…still just 26 of them; I stare and shift,

Trying a new position with each paragraph; a
Hush to the din outside, I meditate:

Angles with a hand around my shoulder,
Guide me through this book tonight.

(thinking about Wings of Desire)

3. Here is one
SWEET companion
Sign of hope
Line to far fisheries
And quiet coves
Bob up and down
Because I leave you
To drowned
Goodbye
Float as I too float
We shall find one another
At the bottom

5. Something about the meek
Inheriting the sea? This is wonderfully disquieting...

7. I try
I read a Calvin and Hobbes strip before I wrote this, the strip talked about how the reason we dream is so we don't have to be apart from one another too long. In this case though I thought a little farther than dreams, to the last dream, but I'd go with this meek thing too!

12. Bill Watterson (C+H) is amazing
Although Mr. Watterson is kind of conservitive (I think, I'm still trying to get a read on him) he is a great guy, a wonderful thinker! If I could memorize (not that I find it helpful) scripture the way I've memorized some of Calvin's lines the Religious Right would have to step back!
I almost did a duet piece in High School of Calvin and Hobbes. It would have been good but my partner decided Speech and Debate wasn't his thing. A pitty.

10. you bet your booglies!
I am not going to drink again. I am not going to buy it again. I am going to avoid those I spent time with that drink.

The last part is the hardest, but that's what I'm doing.

14. Sept. poem
Early Morning Radio

What was it I dreamt last night?
Jazz carrier-waved from Jersey across

Two rivers to my hovel in Brooklyn?
My eyes open to the window, a seamless

Blue autumn sky canopies across Manhattan,
The radio tuned to some Coltrane number,

Traffic on the bridge, the subway’s rumble below, the
P.S. children stomping up 12th street, shop gates

Rising…the usual sounds of a Tuesday. And the
Firehouse was putting on its first pot of coffee, and

We thought this day in September would never end.

15. What was it I dreamt last night?
I don't know - I didn't look
Two rivers to my hovel in Brooklyn?
when's the last time a river took
a minute or two to look
The radio tuned to some Coltrane number,
he's pissing me off cause
i want to hear

Traffic on the bridge, the subway’s rumble below
we'll never know
Firehouse was putting on its first pot of coffee
for those that mumbled the words above

what was it I dreamt last night?
the firemen took to flight
the minute or two turned into a life
I don't have a word that says
you're a good wife
you're a radio tuned
to the one that
has a cause

grshtgrshtsrght- lightning struck and took it all away
