9. North-South flamewars are some of the nastiest
few defend the legacy of slavery, but there are many who rail against the stereotyping and attacks on southerners

4. I like it . . .
I live down here in AL and I really hate it when people start waving this flag. I really hate how when Gov. Bob Riley tried to cut down on the number of holidays gov workers get off by combining, and I am not kidding, Jefferson Davis Day and Confeferate Memorial day into one holiday and the Sons of Confedeate Veterans got mad and declared the governor was trying to destroy southern heritage. This is not a heritage I take pride in, it is a disgusting part of Southern and American history.

And see what kind of record you set for getting banned. (On second thought, you probably can't post images over there.)

11. Back in the 50's
a popular phrase and tattoo was "Born to Lose".
I recall confederate flags with this slogan on them.
As I was raised very near the Mason/Dixon Line we always thought this was very appropriate.

*Shaking head*

I expected better from you JCCyC. Where did the motivation for that come from? I would think you would be more preoccupied with today's tragedy over in Spain.

I do not support the battleflag for extactly the reasons it has become attached to nasty anti-civil rights displays in the 20th century. Nor do I want it flown on the top of the state house. But gee, I don't recall bringing it up at all.

Who extactly are you telling to "get over it?" Certainly not your fellow DUers who happen to be Southerners.

13. My family is fine.
Now I've allowed myself again to focus on mundane things, like working, deciding where to lunch and posting offensive stuff at DU. Thank you for your concern.

By the way, when I studied the American Civil War in school, I was happy the separatists lost. Was that wrong of me?

to be thankful the Union won. But the CW represents a highly charged, highly emotional debate that represents a split in the country *still* visible today. No not just among Southerners.

Why? We stopped fighting, but the issues that war brought out, in addition to the abolition of slavery -- which was necessary -- are still unresolved:

Racism - or more broadly, are we all equal or not? Slowly but surely we have made our way, sometimes in spite of ourselves, to the way of full equality. We're not there yet, but that appears to be the general direction.

States vs Feds - What exactly does belong to the states and what exactly does belong to the Federal Government? This has been argued since the ink dried on the signatures of the last state to sign on in 1789.

The best way to explain it is that I feel that we are climbing a ladder and climbing, making progess (however small it may appear), and then that damn flag shows up and just makes me feel like I'm pushed down another 10 rungs that I've already climbed.

It makes me feel that nothing any southerner does to help will change the way people view the south. That's what makes me sigh. I feel a lot on common with today's Germans on that score.

18. Well, I'm neither American nor German, but...
...if a German sees a Nazi flag with the same "YOU LOST - GET OVER IT" over it, will s/he consider it a personal offense or recognized it as being directed only at the few kooky white supremacist holocaust deniers out there? He might even like the image and thrust it at neonazis himself when they start to spout racist garbage.

I know there are Germans at DU. How would they feel?

14. The South shall rise again!
Being a southerner... originally, I will raise the battle flag for the South!

First of all, you should not be happy the South lost. The war had little to do with slavery, though Yankee historical revisionists have made it seem so.

It had everything to do with economics and government power and involvement in state affairs.

Had the South won, I think eventually slavery would have been abolished by grassroots movements. Many in the South disliked slavery and in the end, would have changed the policy.

16. Ahhhh noooo . . .
the South relied to much on slavery to keep its economy going and if the South had won it would have galvanized the belief that the South was right in what it was doing. Also while slavery and economics of it played the biggest role in war, it was also the South throwin a hissy-fit over the fact that Lincoln won the election without winning a southern state.

The Confederate battle flag, in a red circle with a slash through the centre. Text: You Lost. Get Over It. (Surprised no one keyed my car here in Georgia...)

22. I love it!
It's not a swipe at Southerners (of which I am one), it's a swipe at people who identify with the Confederate cause.

I'd make the words bigger, so they dominate the flag.

Did someone really say the South would have abolished slavery if they won the war? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You make me raff!!! Keep'em coming! Tell me another!
