3. The other end of highway 17 ends in the other liberal bastion, Marin
Well 17 used to until they renumbered the road with 680 or something indexed to 80. Point being, Highway 17 used to start in Santa Cruz and end in Marin as god had intended.

10. 17 in the East Bay was the Nimitz Freeway
They re-designated it I-80 sometime in the '60s. Didn't know 17 crossed the bay, though; I figured it ended around Richmond or Crockett or somewhere.

I remember when there was no 680. We made a couple trips to Walnut Creek/Concord when I was little. You had to go into Oakland and then east on 24 through the Caldecott Tunnel.

20. Some of the teevee traffic folks do, too
Pretty sure whatzisname does — the dude at KTVU, Liz Ferrari's cousin. Sal Castaneda.

I think it still is the Nimitz, officially. It's just that in this era of "I-" everything (or "The"), cool old names like that tend to be forgotten. 'Tis sad.

28. I remember taking the Richmond/SanRafael ferry before the bridge was built
I wonder if they just extended 17 when the bridge was completed. Today, the old 17 ends at the Hwy 101 junction in San Rafael (maybe 3 miles from the bridge). I have some old road maps that I should dig out and study.

8. When I bump you off and collect the insurance money, I'm moving to that general vicinity.
Only back in the mountains a bit- Felton, Big Basin, someplace like that.

It's not cheap, so I'm probably going to need you to get a bit more insurance (I have no idea what you have but I know what California housing costs, so you need more,) and then expire while working in order to double my prize winnings. I need the extra to keep MAHNY around as my kept boy. Thanks dear.

13. Well, you have to hire me first.
That way we can have nooners, which means I get laid, which will kinda take the edge off of the whole you dying thing, plus if we schedule your unfortunate demise for sometime immediately afterward (I figure I'm probably good for a heart attack, between feeding you and the over-exertion) you'll be on the clock and I get more money. And since my services would no longer be needed as your assistant after your untimely demise, there'd probably be an epic severance in it for me to boot.

12. I'll prolly croak after like 183 straight hours
on one of the flight sims at the Boardwalk arcade. How will that work out for ya?

Or maybe I'll get sucked into the black hole that's 41st Ave. commute traffic and never be seen again. :scared:

I haven't been to Felton since I covered a football game at San Lorenzo Valley High about 13 years ago. Dog, it's freakin' gorgeous up there. We drove the loop around UCSC the other day. I never realized it's right smack in the forest and has views of the bay.

Bring a camera, walk down the short path, lie down at the bottom and enjoy thousands upon thousand of butterflies. So relaxing.

I'm not sure when they leave. I think Feb. March may be peak season.

39. Wanna buy a house in Boulder Creek?
Cheap?

It's a wreck, but the setting is stunning: top of a mountain, surrounded by cathedral redwoods. Course, you may have to wait a bit, until we can convince my 90-something year old uncle that a crumbling house up three flights of stairs is not the ideal lodging for a half-blind guy with a bad heart. It's my dead parents' house, but he's still living there.

31. Will Santa cruise to your house on Christmas?
In fact I see that the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_cruise">wikipedia article about Santa Cruz has Santa_cruise in its link.

I have been in and through Santa Cruz a few times when taking trips up and down the California coast, the most recent of which was in 1996 when I visited a good friend who was a camp ranger at the Boy Scout camp near Boulder Creek, and who has since moved elsewhere. I saw a few of the local attractions, such as the http://www.noehill.com/santacruz/cal0583.asp">Felton Covered Bridge, said to be the tallest covered bridge in the nation, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Basin_Redwoods_State_Park">Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Spot">Mystery Spot. The Mystery Spot is definitely strange, but I see that there are explanations which are linked to in the wikipedia article.

The area around Santa Cruz is definitely a beautiful area.

42. She was out on the porch a minute ago
So far, she'll go there (it's a small, enclosed deck) or maybe onto the patio, but she hasn't yet gotten the nerve to venture any further. She's seen Rusty, the neighborhood matriarch, and I think she understands her current place in the kitteharchy. :)

(Who would name a black cat "Rusty"?)
