1. I'm avoiding doing mine.
I'm going to ask for the extention as I have no money to pay them right now.

2. Check with someone - I think even with an extension you need to pay most of it.
You may be able to set up a payment schedule with the IRS.

6. I was stunned - I make quarterly payments and still have to pay more than I have in years
But there were some factors that jacked up our bracket we did not figure in last year when we estimated payments.

I wish I had an excuse to put it off but that would just make things worse.

3. That's why I put mine off for so long. I knew it wouldn't be pretty.
I was approved for SSDI last year, which involved a lot of back pay.

I requested the installment payments.

I'm fucked. :(

17. Are you saying you had to pay taxes on SSDI back pay?
'Cause we never did, and we were told it was not taxable.

18. My CPA advised against an extension in favor of a payment plan
...and the IRS advises against the payment plan in favor of taking out a loan from your bank. That's not going to happen for me, I'm maxed out in that area.

I'm going to owe a LOT...and I don't have the money to pay them...so I will be requesting the payment plan.

A good friend and former boss owes the IRS approximately FOUR TIMES what I will most likely owe. He is on a $300 per month, 2-year plan. He said it works out fine if you pay on time, but if you miss a payment, "they start the wheels turning to shut you down."

Good luck.

7. I did mine last week
Since I left the States in March 2008, and they withheld on the basis of my entire salary, I get a nice chunk back.

I guess I should get around to doing the 2007 and 2006 taxes, though. :P

12. We always have to pay our town.
Edited on Sat Apr-04-09 09:02 AM by Blue Diadem
They doubled it 2 yrs ago too, plus we now have what they call a school tax. I'm just glad we get enough back from the fed. to pay it. Our local taxes are getting ridiculous. This year they're more than what we're paying in Fed. tax. With our state tax added to it, it's now double what we're paying to the fed.

It stinks that you have to pay. You'd think there would be a tax break for those who get back pay like you did.

16. Two years before they notice you.
I made a mistake filing in 2006 because of a form that never got to me after we moved. They informed me in 2008 that I owed a little over $800 for that mistake, and just sent me a notice indicating I now owe an additional $15 in interest penalty. I paid in $50 or $100 a month chunks once they let me know how much I owed - it was difficult, but since I "made the effort" - even though I refused to set up a payment plan, due to issues at home with medical emergencies, they weren't too miffed. My credit sucks anyway, so why worry as long as I eventually pay off?

The problem comes when you think you've paid them off, they always come up with some bullshit after the fact nickle/dime penalty they didn't figure in before you paid them off, even if you were in contact with them the entire step of the way - and you do have to keep on them, or they'll "lose" something or put the payment towards something else.

Good luck.
Haele

Since you were first into the kidney market, I guess I'll offer half a liver and a few pints of plasma...
