I hope you are all sitting down
The family and I went to church today. My life partner, who is even more resistant to religion than I, decided he wanted to check out the local UCC church because we heard the pastor speak at the Eve of Justice event. (The Eve of Justice was an event the night before the California Supreme Court convened to here the arguments for and against Proposition 8).

We actually really enjoyed the service and are thinking about going back.

1. My mother took us to some UCC services while we were growing up
My memories consist of standing around in circles singing songs...Far from unpleasant..:)

4. Me, being a practically excommunicated Catholic
I found the order of the litergy to be quite comfortable. Just enough music and just enough ritual without having the service take up an hour and a half.

5. You are dead to me now.
j/k.
I have friends who never thought that they'd darken the doorstep of a house of worship again who ended up joining U/U, UCC, or other less dogmatic faiths.
:hi:

6. Once again, another decent human being gets sucked into an Organized Religion.
It's always SADDER when it's someone I know.

7. Yet another sign
of the Apocalypse. Kidding aside, take peace where you can find it in these difficult days.

8. See if they have a CUUPS group there
The UUs are cool -- we were married by one, remember.

But I like the UUs too.

11. ERRRK -- sorry!
Interesting, since the UCC are a Christian Church, unlike the UUs.

12. I felt really comfortable there!
It was really strange (but part of the comfort may have been my prior Catholicism).

16. That's the only thing that bothers me about the UUs
This ex RC LOVES ritual, and the Unitarians have very little.

17. I tried the UU church here and found the ritual to be lacking too.
The UCC has enough ritual without the soul crushing dogma of the RC church, at least for me.

And if I need more ritual, I can come home and cast a circle.

10. good for you
I've gotten support and found friends at church that are solid and true after years. The church I attend practices what is preached - give back to the community and make a difference. We had a peace vigil the night before we went to war. Amazing people.

19. My dear KitchenWitch!
That's wonderful! Religion, when it's not being dogmatic, can often be a wonderful, life-affirming event!

I'm really happy for all of you...
