It's seriously screwing up my karaoke career. I have to sing along in a lower octave because it strains my voice to sing like those guys and I can't hit the high notes at all. I'm mean some of those guys are actually altos. Bully Corgan probably confused some people when that first Smashing Pumpkins album came out. He might be the one that started this stuff.
When "Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheetus came out I seriously thought that was a lesbian love song until I saw a picture of the band and there was no woman in it. Check it out:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QNO9xDADB8 That's a good tune, but I liked it even better when I thought it was lesbian love song. I don't hear many guys who are quite that high pitched, but the alternative scene is flooded with guys who sound like this:

I'm not saying there is anything wrong for a guy to have a high voice, but I'd like to hear some variation. It sounds like every male-fronted alternative band out there has the same lead singer. The guy from Clutch is a baritone and he has a very strong, masculine voice. He sounds great and I don't understand why you have to have that high voice to get a record deal or some air time. I haven't heard Clutch outside of satellite radio except for some silly rap song they made ten years ago, and I listen to 6 different commercial rock stations. Here's a tune by them called "Electric Worry"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx6FV2qR2TY That's more of a straight up rock tune, but you get the idea.
And while we're at it, why do so many female lead singers in alternative sound like this?
