I just had the weirdest work call ever
Edited on Thu Mar-19-09 03:23 PM by HarukaTheTrophyWife
Me: ---- Office, Haruka speaking, how can I help you?
Him: Hi, is Boss in?
Me: No, he's out with a client right now, may I take a message?
Him: He left me a message yesterday, but my phones were down and I didn't get it until today.
Me: Okay, I would be happy to take down your #.
Him: It's xxx-xxx-xxxx. Tell him it's regarding the message he left me about the fox.
Me: The fox?
Him: Yes, he said he found a road-killed fox and would like to get it mounted.
Me: Okay, I'll pass it along.

Ewwww...picking up dead foxes from the road?

7. I wonder if he is going to try to pass it off as something he killed.
Is he a hunter? Because I wouldn't tell anyone I mounted some dead animal I found in the road.

20. One of the guys I work with had a roadkill bobcat mounted.
It was a recent kill, it wasn't smashed and damaged and he was pleased with the results. His wife discovered it on her way to work, called him and he came to pick it up.

16. I have a friend that collects road kill whenever she sees it
Edited on Thu Mar-19-09 05:35 PM by merh
She runs a wildlife rescue clinic of sorts, where she takes care of injured wildlife and nurses it back to health to be returned to the wild.

Depending on the age of the road kill, she will "scoop it up" to feed the wildlife she is nursing back to health.

And if you think about it, if the road kill mounting is what you understood it to be, your boss is giving the animal a second life of sorts and he isn't responsible for it's death - he isn't a hunter that kills for sport.

Foxes are beautiful animals, we have three in the neighborhood that roam at night, its a treat when I get a glimpse of 'em.

I don't see a problem with hunting as long as you eat the meat, though.

34. I have never heard of eating fox or any of the wild cats
or wolves or coyotes - those kills are generally considered trophy kills. The hunt is for the sport (though some live stock owners do hunt to protect their live stock.) Better to mount road kill than to hunt and kill for sport, dontcha think?

36. Yeah, he hunts deer and elk
I don't agree with killing stuff for sport.

My dog's herding trainer keeps guardian dogs, so he doesn't have to shoot the coyotes/bears around here.

38. I'm fostering a Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog - Catahoula Cur
her mom is military and can't have her on base and doesn't have permission to live off base yet so she needed a foster home for her dog, Chloe. They say the breed is aggressive but she is one of the smartest dogs I've ever dealt with and one of the most loyal and affectionate. I've seen her when she thinks someone or another dog is a threat to my safety, I can imagine she would do a great job of keeping coyotes or other critters away.

39. They actually use them a decent amount in cattle herding
He uses Maremmar dogs. They look like Great Pyrenees, which are bred for the same thing (as least the working lines are). They put them out with the sheep as puppies, and they grow up bonded with the sheep. They'll protect the flock, and the sheep accept them and will actually go to them for protection.

The sheep are usually quite scared of Border Collies, because they herd by doing the wolf predator behavior. They just stop short of the kill.

41. I take all four dogs for a walk several times during the day (I have
3 - a pug, jack russell and yorkie). If I stop during our walk Chloe will do the circle back herding move, sometimes it is cute and other times she gets us all tangled up.
