Twitter users - a stupid question
What does it mean when someone puts a # in their posts followed by a word?

1. It's a tag so others who search with that specific tag can see the Tweet.
for instance, go to the very bottom of your Twitter home page, click on the word "search" and see the most popular tags right at this moment. As an experiment, click on one, and then you'll see all the Tweets coming in on that tag in real time.

3. No problem.
:hi:
Sometimes if something interesting is happening, if you go to the tag and search you can see others tweeting about it in real time. Ball games on tv, the Oscars, Pres. Obama on tv, etc.

4. Bingo.
And it's been an effective tool when organizing during demonstrations/events/conferences.

7. I can imagine it can be an invaluable tool!
:hi:

Your last Tweet was the reason I asked, I had seen it before but I never asked before.

9. There are still a few things on there that made my brain hurt.
Like when you get PM someone, not only do I get their message but my cell gets a message that says to reply with "(name of person) hi."

10. I have chosen (at this point) to keep it off my cell phone
I am a luddite and have an old RAZR, so texting and tweeting are difficult at best.

11. I only have alerts turned on if someone responds to my tweet or sends a private message.
Edited on Fri Mar-06-09 02:42 PM by JackBeck
I can't imagine my phone buzzing every time someone posted.

I did discover yesterday, though, how to turn on individual alerts, which I fully intend to utilize the next time I'm at a conference or rally. I was too much of a newbie at CC09 to understand how others were using it for meet-ups. It wasn't until Kate Clinton made an announcement at the conference when it finally started to make some sort of sense.

5. It's called a hashtag. I got a crash course a few months ago.
When I attended the Creating Change conference in Denver (#cc09).

If I hadn't joined twitter I would have missed a chance to meet some of my favorite LGBT bloggers and activists.

Don't even get me started on what my husband calls the bunch of us.
