26. aaarrghh is right
Admittedly, I haven't seen SDM. However, at this point, I don't know if I want to. I'm so tired of it winning everything! AND, what is going on with it winning all these awards, and not one nomination for any of the acting? How does that work? If its such a great movie, how is it that none of the actors were worthy? It doesn't make sense to me.

165. If it's a strong ensemble cast
you can't really nominate someone for supporting/lead actor.

That said, this movie had the biggest mass media campaign I can remember. Not having seen it versus the other films, I can't comment on how it compares. But their media campaign was enormous.

Normally the previous year's winner would present (opposite sex for the acting awards) but I think this was (a) much nicer, in the case of the actors and (b) much more fun, in the case of everyone else.

61. Best actress: Kate Winslet
Shirley MacLaine was the perfect person to pay tribute to Anne Hathaway. Good for whoever chose her to do so.

And Kate Winslet is aging so normally, nicely, and naturally. I hope she keeps it up. We need more women actors who look like people (she's even hotter when she's a little heavier, IMO).

About time Melissa Leo showed up. She's a working actor who has more than paid her dues.

And I hope I look half as good as Sofia Loren when I'm her age, although she could probably eschew the spraytan machine for a bit and look even better (but OMG that BODY!).

Angelina Jolie? Not so much. That performance was embarassingly over the top.

191. Melissa Leo has been a working actor for 30 years
meaning she has paid her bills with acting gigs for 30 years (this is not common, FWIW -- we have a 98% unemployment rate in our field).

About damn time she got the nod. She's got a couple of films in the can right now and this will massively increase her asking price.

I love seeing working actors get an Oscar nod. They go from "I can just barely pay the bills if I visit the food bank every so often" to "I can pay the bills." So few of us even get to the first part of the deal trying to make a career of acting.

Melissa Leo, you rock! :yourock:

195. Richard Jenkins, like Melissa Leo, is one of those rare people
who makes a full-time living out of acting (in the sense of they can pay the bills on it for the most part, but aren't living the stereotypical Hollywood lifestyle). Working actors like Leo and Jenkins are a rare breed, and it takes years and years to get to the point where they did.

The Oscar nom is icing on the cake. These people seriously paid their dues. Glad to see it rewarded.

107. Best actor: Sean Penn!!!! HOORAY!!!!! (not that I'm biased)
Micheal Douglas has been even more fearless as a director than he has as an actor. Good choice to pay tribute to Langella, even though he's not fit to kiss Langella's dirty shoue.

DeNiro and Penn have worked together a bunch, so this was a beautiful choice. Loved the Spicoli reference. And the applause for playing Harvey Milk. And that Penn was purple with embarassment when the camera cut to him.

Adrien Brody -- one "obscure" to the general public actor praising another one. Good choice.

Hopkins and Pitt worked together early in Pitt's career (Legends of the Fall, anyone?). Again, nice choice.

Kingsley for Rourke. Finesse versus brute strength. I like it. The welcome back was genuine, too.

For the SDM haters, this category's pretty OK. ;)

202. Best Actor was tight among those three this year.
They all gave phenomenal performances. Penn has deserved a Best Actor (he got Best Supporting for Mystic River) for some time now (he was phenomenal in both The Falcon and the Snowman and Dead Man Walking), and to some degree this may have been a "career" award for him -- BTW, for serious Oscar fans, there was no Thalberg Award fore Lifetime Achievement tonight and WTF was up with that -- but WRT Penn this was an AMAZING role for him.

We've seen comedic stoner Penn; we've seen tough, hardcore Penn. As an actor I can't completely explain the reach he made, but he did things in the role of Harvey Milk that he'd never shown previously that he was capable of as an actor. This was one of those once-in-a-lifetime performances that every actor, regardless of gender, hopes for.

When was the last time you watched a movie where you wanted to hug and be best friends with Sean Penn's character? Oh, that's right: never. Penn showed things playing Harvey Milk that you knew he had in him as an actor, but whether he got them out was a whole nother issue. He completely inhabited the character -- THAT is why he won. He left himself aside and inhabited the character.

It's not easy (although more common) in live theatre, but it's not common at all in film. Penn had to sustain the role for as long as it took to shoot the film. Whether he agreed with the premise of the film or not (remember that most actors take gigs to put food on their table regardless of whether they agree with the premise of the project) -- and I know he did because of what he had to say about this particular project -- he still had to sustain the character over an enormous number of days.

Understand please, that actors can turn their characters off when they're noton set, so it's not a matter of what s/he took home -- that crap mostly gets left at the office. Regardless, it's still an enormous drain to make the kind of physical and vocal change it would take for a Penn to play Harvey Milk over the period of time it took for Van Sant to shoot the movie. He deserves every shred of credit he's gotten.

143. I don't like this cutting around between present and past films.
I find it kind of disconcerting and a bit pointless.

180. I agree
Edited on Mon Feb-23-09 12:01 AM by lavenderdiva
I really liked the new way they had of presenting the best acting awards, with actors/actresses of many different generations giving, what seemed to be genuine anyway, praise to the current nominees. It made it much more interesting. I also liked that they kept certain presenters on for more than one award. It kept the pace moving.

To me at least, it seemed that they put some thought into selecting the presenter with the type of award, in most cases. That Sarah Jessica Parker was chosen for Art and Costume made sense. There were a couple of others that were that way too, IMO.

edit to add: I also liked the stage design. I liked the circular sort of design; it made it seem more intimate with the audience.

190. I agree on all points, and I didn't notice one speech they cut into with music
which is always one of the most tacky things they can do to someone who just won an Oscar. The producers this year managed to create a very entertaining and aesthetically appealing show. Hugh Jackman was very good too. Didn't over do it. I think Ben Stiller and Nathalie Portman were the best presenters, but I'm biased because she's one of my favorites. Stiller was hilarious though, wandering around, putting the gum on the podium.

All in all, I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it.

187. My Predictions...19 Correct, 5 Incorrect
Not too bad this year. The two sound categories were hard for me this year and I think WALL-E really should have pulled at least one of those out. I also don't agree with the Animated Short, Presto was a much stronger candidate.

Correct(19):
Best Picture- Slumdog Millionaire
Directing- Slumdog Millionaire
Actor- Sean Penn
Actress- Kate Winslet
Supporting Actor- Heath Ledger
Supporting Actress- Penelope Cruz
Adapted Screenplay- Slumdog Millionaire
Original Screenplay- Milk
Animated Feature- WALL-E
Live Action Short- Toyland
Documentary Feature- Man on Wire
Music Score- Slumdog Millionaire
Music Song- Jai Ho
Art Direction- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Cinematography- Slumdog Millionaire
Costume Design- The Duchess
Film Editing- Slumdog Millionaire
Makeup- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Visual Effects- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Incorrect(5):
Animated Short Film- Presto
Foreign Language- Waltz with Bashir
Documentary Short- The Witness
Sound Editing- WALL-E
Sound Mixing- The Dark Knight

192. I caught the tail end of the Oscars
And I think I might be sorry I missed all that came before. I turned it on as Kate Winslet was giving her acceptance speech - which was lovely. Then they brought out five previous Best Actor winners to personally introduce each male nominee for this year. That's a really refreshing bit. Then, Mr. Penn's wonderful, rousing speech. After, I see movie clips, movie clips, movie clips and that gorgeous bit of editing they did to give recognition to all the year's Best Picture nominees... I'm thinking I missed an especially show-biz loving night. I dig those.

198. The new format really was refreshing...
It started with the set, bringing the orchestra on stage. The format that you saw with 5 previous winners announcing the nominees was the same for all 4 of the acting categories.

We'll have to see how the ratings are for this one, I think they will be much higher than last years.
