Find something you like that is undervalued and buy it. I like to buy stock in companies who make things I use myself.

Look into breweries. You could do worse. People probably drink MORE in recessions.

My department is the only one in the store that is consistently up over last year's numbers. People drink when times are good - they drink more when times are bad.

9. Can't eat gold.

I've never understood the gold standard. Gold is valuable because someone once said it was valuable--it has very little actual use. Pretty jewelry, sure...but you can't eat it, can't live in it, can't heat with it, can't cure cancer with it.
