at 4:30 this afternoon I sign the papers to file for divorce...
it is odd that a decision I agonized over for years actually has a time stamp attached to it. I thought I would feel happy, or maybe even sad, instead I am just kind of numb, weird

2. That's what it was like for me by that point
It wasn't a happy occasion, of course, but it wasn't sad or gut wrenching either. It just was.

5. Now you're taking refuge in the bureuacratic process
The anodyne of routine.

If you and your hubby are truly done you'll subconsiously get happier and happier about it.

6. Numb is a feeling....
At least I think so...Ive been there many times.
And then comes the joy of freedom...
You'll be fine....Even though you have a wonderful future ahead, I understand the weirdness.

Hug for you:hug:

peace~

8. Relationships are complex enough,...
When quantified by an artificial contrivance of marriage and divorce both never quite fit. We emotionally alter with nip and tucks here and there. "Numb" gets us through.
I am sorry for your loss and rejoice in clean fresh new beginning.

10. Not weird.
I felt the same way when I signed the papers. Just quiet, sorta numb. I'd already felt sad for much of the 11-year marriage, so sadness was out of the way, at least, by the time I filed then later received and signed the papers.

There's no one who can tell you authoritatively what is the right or appropriate time for you to feel anything. You have a good mind and a good heart. Trust them.

11. I have officially signed my papers...
and I feel a little better all ready, amazing what the stroke of a pen (or several strokes, who knew there would be so much paperwork?!) can do. :)

12. Agreed. It's a weight that lifts.
When I first got served with my papers, I was pretty numb. I was recovering from another bipolar episode, and got them when I was making my first visit back to my house to begin packing to move out.

By the time I got the final papers (six months later, after the house was cleaned out and sold), it was a huge relief. I was just happy to have it all done, and to get my final financial settlement from it. I was done with her, and our life together, and just wanted my $60k from the house sale so I could move across town and carry on with my life.

Best of luck to you, whatever your future holds :toast:

13. mine was very non-dramatic as well.
I wasn't exactly numb, but I didn't exactly feel anything either.

The signing is just one step in a journey.

I'll be doing much the same, soon...same thing, thought i'd feel pretty sad, but I feel neutral. I guess things really have been over for awhile.

20. I had a very similar experience. Heard the divorce was final in
another state over the telephone. Thought I'd be extatic but I wasn't. It is sad to let go of something but soon there is new life. It is a very strange experience. I remember it to this day which is 30 years later. Never looked back. You will be fine. Go on and don't look back!
