I do love local news when we get an ice storm.
NOTHING else is going on ANYWHERE except slippery roads and car accidents. The weatheman tells us that he couldn't get into his car that morning because of the ice. Nobody owns an ice scraper. There is detailed analysis of the sand truck deployment. And of course there is actual footage of all manner of frozen things. Now there's a report from the local hospitals - 10 ice related injuries so far! And now the news from the airport - tons of flights cancelled, 1500 people had to sleep at the airport last night.

I'm just not getting out of bed.

1. good morning, fellow Metroplexer. It is fun, isn't it? I loved the big parking lot
full of 18 wheelers up in Denton.

I fully expect a grain by grain sand count just any second.

My office has a delayed opening ..don't have to be there until 10 and my normal commute time door to door is 20 minutes. I will double that for the drive this morning, and maybe take the local route

LOL we had people abandoning ship at noon yesterday, scared of the home commute, when the streets weren't near cold enough for the little bit of freezing mist to cause a problem

Ice storms in the South are truly a hoot.

Remember that big one about 8 years ago that shut down the whole 'plex for 2 days? This is nothing compared to that one. :toast: :donut: :donut: :donut: :donut:

5. and there's always footage of kids sledding
and the reporter always says, "At least some people are enjoying this weather!" It's a big cliche up here. That, and the obligatory interview with a "man on the street" who says, "Global warming, what's that?"

6. Can't sled on THIS stuff.
Just a sheet of ice. I don't think Texas kids know how to sled. But when there's snow, we do get snowman pictures. They're usually about a foot or two tall, haha.

9. Ice is the best stuff to sled on.
I remember when I was in High school we got like 3 inches of ice. My best friend and I had a blast on the hill near my house. All we had was refrigerator box and that big long slick hill. It was the best. It sucked when you hit the one tiny dry spot on the whole hill though. Box stopped moving you kept going.

13. I knew a guy from south Florida that had never seen ice
He moved farther north and during the first ice storm he saw everyone else scraping. He didn't have a scraper and got the bright idea to take his tire tool and break the ice off. He completely destroyed his windshield. It was almost as good as people who pour boiling water on their car.

14. Called in sick
The woman I spoke with acted like I just didn't want to go in. Maybe I should have found a way to go in & coughed in her face. :(

15. I agree....when we get one of these in the DFW area (having one now)
It's like a career event for the weatherpeople. Everyone gets in on the act...the TV folks, the radio DJs. I guess they have no justification for existence other than the occasional ice storm.

The New England weatherfolks are coming unglued right now. Two feet of snow by this evening!

NE, mid winter. Quell surprise.

16. I love news coverage of storms too.
Back home in So. Cali., if three raindrops fall it's STORM WATCH 2009.

Ice and tornados are the only weather things that scare me.

19. Back in the old days, I was in the Army at Fort Bragg.
There was an ice storm, maybe 1/4" of ice over everything, so - they closed Fort Bragg and Pope AFB, at the time the largest militry installation in the US (taken together).

Good thing no one invaded us.
