and Jersey is the best place on earth to get a sub sandwich.

Seven Hills of Istanbul in Highland Park has amazing Turkish food. I still dream about their fried feta cheese and phyllo dough and they sold uludag gazog- soda that tastes like bubblegum. Yum.

105. Hey, lower Montclair is nice too!
Edited on Tue Jan-27-09 07:57 PM by latebloomer
Has most of the ethnic restaurants, and the Wellmont Theater is now a venue for big name musical acts. Plus there's Trumpets, the jazz club, and Luna Stage.

It's just Montclair, but it has 2 different zipcodes. Sometimes people say they live in "Upper" Montclair like their s@#t don't stink.

Sorry, but you innocently just hit one of my pet peeves.

PS- "Lower" Montclair has some of the fanciest houses, but also contains the AA part of town. Montclair is revered for its diversity, but I suspect some people need to mention that they live far away from "those" people.

Parts of Montclair proper are somewhat funkier than the upper half, but also more interesting.

Sorry to jump on this, but it pushes my buttons.

Funny story- when my daughter was about 5, she heard of "Upper" Montclair and asked, "Mommy, do we live in Downer Montclair?" A friend of mine actually made a T-shirt that read "Downer Montclair".

147. Where in NJ?
Sorry you had a bad time there.
NJ has lots of places that suck, but there are also plenty of wonderful places.

I've lived in a lot of places in NJ: Red Bank, Paterson (as a little kid in the 50s, when everyone in our neighborhood spoke Dutch or German), Wayne, Piscataway, New Brunswick, Highland Park, Franklin Township, South Bound Brook, Metuchen and South Plainfield. The place I really hated was South Bound Brook, an ugly town full of hostile, unfriendly, downright stupid assholes, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

If we could afford to move back to NJ -- which we can't, because the property taxes are so outrageous -- I'd probably want to live somewhere in Ocean County because it's closest to family and friends. Though I've heard the Haddonfield area is nice.

I lived in South Plainfield for a few years in the early 1980s. We attended the Unitarian church in Plainfield. I can't say what it's like now, but when we lived there, Plainfield was attracting a large gay population that was fixing up the beautiful Victorian houses and establishing some really nice restaurants and stores.

168. South Plainfield is not worth the trouble
It's a boring middle-class/working class town. The ONLY cool thing about it -- and this was many years ago -- was the amazing Christmas decorating effort by two families that lived in the tiny old millworkers' houses next to the closed-down steel mill. Anything that could possibly be lit up with colored lights, was lit. One guy cut out and painted 6-foot cartoon characters and propped them up on his lawn with spotlights. After all, what reflects the spirit of Christmas more than Yogi Bear or Fred Flintstone? Cars would line up for more than a mile in each direction in order to drive by these houses. One of the couples always dressed as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and stood outside waving to everyone as the cars inched by. We took our kids to see them every year. The families are long gone now.

139. State Song
"I'm From New Jersey"

(lyrics)

I know of a state that's a perfect playland with white sandy beaches by the sea;
With fun-filled mountains, lakes and parks, and folks with hospitality;
With historic towns where battles were fought, and presidents have made their home;
It's called New Jersey, and I toast and tout it wherever I may roam. 'Cause . . .

I'M FROM NEW JERSEY and I'm proud about it, I love the Garden State.
I'M FROM NEW JERSEY and I want to shout it, I think it's simply great.
All of the other states throughout the nation may mean a lot to some;
But I wouldn't want another, Jersey is like no other, I'm glad that's where I'm from.

If you want glamour, try Atlantic City or Wildwood by the sea;
Then there is Trenton, Princeton, and Fort Monmouth, they all made history.
Each little town has got that certain something, from High Point to Cape May;
And some place like Mantoloking, Phillipsburg, or Hoboken will steal your heart away.

.....

"New Jersey's Unofficial State Song 'I'm From New Jersey,' passed both Legislative Houses in 1972. However it was not signed into law by the Governor. It remains popular statewide and on the Web."

And to answer CreekDog's question: Sandy Hook and High Point are absolutely beautiful (High Point especially in the fall).

Jersey kicks some serious ass. Seriously.

148. Sussex, Warren, Somerset and Morris Counties are all beautiful.
Lots of woods and even some farms still left and tons of rich history dating back to the birth of our country. I spent the first 29 years of my life there before moving to Maine and some of the most genuine and generous people I've ever known are from NJ.

And if you want the best pizza, bagels, sub sandwiches, Chinese food, or a complete breakfast at 2 in the morning, NJ can't be beat. It's too crowded for me, but still a very cool state.

155. well, my ex-wife is from NJ
so, that is two good things, offset by her relative lack of sanity, but I don't hold that against NJ.

I think southern NJ is a completely different state than northern NJ, though, and both have their good & bad points.

As a place to live, I would prefer northern NJ because of all the conveniences and proximity to NYC, though the cost of living is on the high side.

184. Also partially in NJ waters
it actually appears to be split by the state line!

I took the tour once. Of interest here is that two-thirds of the immigrants who came through there never saw NYC but were ferried over to the Jersey City side, where they boarded trains for immigrant-friendly destinations in the interior such as Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee etc.

The NY/NJ situation is quite a bit more complex than I had realized:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liberty_Island#Relationship_to_New_York_and_New_Jersey

The belief that Liberty Island is "in" New Jersey is derived from these facts:

Liberty Island's proximity to Jersey City;
Its appearance on maps on the New Jersey side of the state line;
New Jersey's victory in a 1998 lawsuit with New York over the ownership of parts of Ellis Island.
New Jersey's provision of all utility services, including electricity, water, and sewage, to Liberty and Ellis islands ...

The islands of New York harbor have been part of New York since the issuance in 1664 of the colonial charter that created New Jersey (see charter text). This charter stated that New Jersey "bounded by the Hudson River" rather than from the middle channel, as was common in other colonial charters. That is, as everyone understood at the time, the New York-New Jersey border did not go through the center of the river channel as one might naturally assume. An 1834 compact between New York and New Jersey, which primarily concerned the status of Staten Island, set the boundary line between the States as the middle of the Hudson River but reaffirmed that Staten Island and the other islands belonged to New York.

In that case, why don't maps show the border hugging the NJ side, as with the Potomac between Md. and Va.? (Before Va. had a lottery, at least one bait shop at the end of a pier did a land-office business selling Md. lottery tickets.) :shrug:
