DVD's have such an incredible dynamic range (audible difference between the quietest parts and the loudest parts at any given volume level) that there is no way to quietly watch a movie and still be able to hear all of the dialog. I find the overall presentation on most modern films to be a whole lot louder than I ever really want to hear it, to be honest.
I often wonder what my neighbors think of the machine guns and live artillery fire in my living room at 3:00AM, though they have never said a word to me about it.
