TM had her wisdom teeth out this morning. I learned a great deal on the ride home.
1. Apparently, she got a BMX bike for Christmas, but later sold it for $80.

2. She's going skiing this afternoon with her friends Chris and Todd.

3. She can't sleep in the car because she needs to look at the scenery because Daddy always tells them to look at the scenery when we're driving someplace.

4. Colleen and Siobhan aren't her friends anymore because they moved away 8 years ago.

5. She is graduating in 2009.

6. They took out all her teeth, so she is going to look like a pirate.

Versed rocks.

1. Sounds like she got some good stuff....
I bet she won't remember any of the stuff she babbled either....
I have to say though, having had my wisdom teeth out years ago..TM is in for a rough few days (the percocet they gave me did NOTHING for my jaw pain)

2. She was able and willing to talk after having her wisdom teeth out?
Edited on Fri Dec-26-08 11:22 AM by socialdemocrat1981
And she's going skiing this afternoon?

Most of my friends who had their wisdom teeth out needed at least a day's rest and were not in any position to talk properly. I'm glad your daughter seems to have escaped that

Anyway, hope she feels better soon:hug:

3. Good God, no.
And, 'talking' is probably a very loose interpretation of what she was doing in the car on the way home.

The doc said she did very well, and she's now sleeping upstairs.

Thanks.

7. Ah, OK, I see what you mean
I think my sister was a bit like that when she had her wisdom teeth out. Did she have it done under local or general anathesia?

I'm glad the doctor thinks she did very well and once again my best wishes to her for a speedy and comprehensive recovery. I've been where your daughter is and I know what it's like:hug:

6. She had laughing gas, Versed and a local anesthetic.
When the local wears off, she's got a narcotic, a steroid, and an antiemesis drug to take.

She should be fine. She's hardly swollen at all.

8. I think the local anathesia/laughing gas tends to make you quite relaxed
and cheerful in the immediate aftermath. I remember my sister was very "high" after she came back from her surgery until it wore off and the pain hit. Whereas myself and the friends that I know had it done under general anathesia and so we felt the pain and discomfort immediately when we woke up

11. Lucky
I swear I remember the oral surgeon saying they needed a hammer and chisel to get mine out. It sure felt like someone had been banging on my jaw for days after :scared:
Outside of my first bone marrow biopsy, the post surgery pain was the most awful pain I've ever had.

15. Mine were chiseled too.
I got sent home with 80 mg oxycodone (Oxycontin) tabs and hydroxyzine (Vistaril). Oh boy, I felt great. But then, I thought that I had no pain and that I'd been overmedicated with being given both an opiate and a potentiator...so I delayed a dosing by an hour.

:scared: Big mistake. The 90 minutes it took to get the level of painkillers in my bloodstream back to an effective level were the worst pain I've ever experienced. Lying on the floor bawling like a baby.

Lesson learned: When the maxillofacial surgeon starts handing out large-dosage schedule II opiates like candy, he's not being generous. Take them, then call him to ask if you really need that much. Not vice-versa.

30. Pain's window of opportunity
When I was hospitalized with major orthopedic surgery, I decided I didn't really need all the oxycodone they were giving me. I'd had a morphine drip for a few days after the surgery, but I knew I was all right without as much chemical intervention.

Oh, Jesus, was I wrong!

Like you, I got hit with the pain like a nuclear attack. I couldn't get those opiates into me fast enough.

That was when the head of nursing education (we'd become friendly, both of us having obtained graduate degrees from the same university) explained to me that pain lurks, just waiting for a gap in the painkiller coverage, and it will slip in there, if given the opportunity - the one you and I gave it - and do its damage.

Ever since then, I've been religious about paying attention to timing. I'm not as tough as I thought I was.

22. The right side was easy for me.
The left side was another story. The bottom one was badly decayed and the dental students who did the procedure took quite a while to get it out. Every time they grabbed it, a peice would break off. At one point they sent for the instructor. I was pretty well numb and did not feel anything. I've had root canals that were much worse. I do remember the oral surgeon using a kind of chisel to loosen the ones on the right side before taking them out. Sorry to hear the biopsy hurt so much. I think I have heard that. They take it from the hip, don't they?

27. Yeah (KW stay away!)
The bmb is from the hip. The first time I had a local and had it done at the hems office. The anasethetic they give you to numb the bone was horrible. And even with that, when they did get the marrow it felt like fire when they removed it.
The second bmb was at Mayo and they knocked me out for that. It was sooo much easier..I even recovered much quicker...

35. Really depends on who does it
I've had 4, all with locals- with 1 doc it was excruciating, the second no more painful than an injection, the third I barely felt it at all. When I have another I will refuse anyone but her! She is famous for her painless BMBs.

then I saw the nurse with 5 syringes in his hand....

When I came to, my arm was in a cast and I was telling my Supervisor (it was an on-the-job accident) what I was planning to do over Christmas.

What happened in between, I have no idea!

I hope I did not cuss too bad

20. Snort!
I'm grateful none of my family were there the last time I had Versed for a medical procedure. Sheesh - I don't know why the hell they bother to water-board anyone. Just schedule a colonoscopy, and give those guys a dose of Versed. Of course half of what you'll get is sheer nonsense, but that's what they're already giving you, so what's the difference?

23. Wierd.
I remember having my wisdoms out. It was pretty sweet. My dad told me his horror stories, apparently when he had his out, he had scheduled a date for later that night. Had to cancel, of course, and was knocked on his arse for 4+ days. So I feared the worst, planned to take a week off school.

I was eating cornnuts later in the day with no problems. I never did tell my parents, and I really did enjoy that time off school. Got a lot of reading done.

31. I only had one wisdom tooth
One of my parents had both, the other had none, and I ended up with just one which was removed years ago. It was easy as it had only one root and so I had no pain afterwards. I even went to IHOP for breakfast.

My daughter has been informed by her dentist that she lacks the buds for wisdom teeth. I am glad she got that gene!

I have met a few people who have the genetic luck that prevents them from getting cavities.
I wish I could have been so lucky!

Sorry your daughter is having pain though...at least it is over with.

34. I got the tip of my left ring finger slammed in a safe.
I was taken to Suburban in DC, and they got a plastic surgeon. He was going to fix the nail bed so I wouldn't lose my nail. It was broken in 16 places from the joint to the end.

He does this under a local anesthetic. He got ready and we both had attitudes. I had one because my finger looked like hamburger and hurt like an SOB. I guess he had one because he was a surgeon. He told me he would do the anesthetic in 2 parts. He would numb it some, and then shoot the major stuff in.

I thought he would hit it once with something, let it settle, and then do the rest. But noooooooooo.
He takes the first needle and starts jabbing the end like he's poking holes. I decked him. Knocked him right off his stool with my right fist. It was sheer reaction. That is the worst pain I have ever had.

He got a nurse to come in, and once it was really numb I was fine. We BOTH had realattitudes after that. He didn't sue me or anything. He's lucky I was in too much pain to get off the table and stomp on his fingers.

I got Demerol to take. I was fiiiiine after that.

37. Had all four of mine out when I was 21 ...
... scheduled to be done by the most gorgeous young dentist then known to be in captivity.

So I arrived for the procedure in a mini-skirt and fishnets, and full make-up.

I had a general anesthetic, and it turned out they couldn't "wake me" after it was over. So Dr. Gorgeous carried me into his office, and put me down on the couch to "sleep it off".

When I came to, he was standing there, asking if I was okay. I said I was fine - he just kept smilin' away. Said, "Oh, there's something that belongs to you on my desk ...," and left.

Went over to his desk, where my false eyelashes - tops and bottoms - were neatly laid out. Once I was "out", I'd scrunched my eyes closed - and my eyelashes all popped off. So much for making a lasting impression.

When I went back a week later to have the stitches out, I was rather aloof - being humiliated by the incident, and hoping he'd forgotten. He finally brought it up - said, "You don't really need them - but I really appreciated the thought."

We had a good laugh.
