ThinkBlue1966 just got done taking the test to be a Census Worker next spring.
She says the test was pretty easy, and they're going to try and place people within their grid blocks (home neighborhoods) if at all possible, because workers obviously are more familiar with their own neighborhoods than others.

Starting pay is $10.75/hr in West Virginia for field workers, and office workers can make up to $14.50. If she gets it, this will literally be the best-paying job that ThinkBlue1966 has had in ten years. The hours are compatible with her school schedule too--mostly evenings and weekends. The job will last approximately 10 weeks, but for a Poli-Sci major looking for a government job after graduation, ANY government job experience is a good thing to have on a resume.

Please send lots of good vibes to her. We need this badly.

2. Nice! Good luck to her!
Do you know how many people applied along with her? I'm thinking of applying, since I'm self-employed and could arrange my schedule around that extra work.

4. She says that there were about 50-60 other people there today to
take the test and fill out applications. They're doing several other sessions in the next few days at the unemployment office and the public library, too. According to ThinkBlue, there were quite a few older retirees applying--which was heartbreaking for her, because the ones sitting near her couldn't even make it through the entire 28-question test. Apparently they were pretty upset about it.

It's a sad state of affairs in America when retired people are applying for a job that's going to require them to tramp from door to door like that. Desperation must be getting more intense. *sigh*

9. Y'all are pretty heroic to me
What with having to deal with one of them boy-things and all these weird magnet-balls and cartoons where the people have eyes that take up 3/4 of their heads and their mouths don't move with the words and... :scared:

And moreover, you're good, honorable people.

Serious.

5. Very cool!
I was a field worker in 2000, but only for a few weeks. They kept sending me into some questionable areas despite my protests.

6. My dad did that in 2000.
He loves talking to people and enjoyed himself a lot.

He is retired so it's the perfect job for him. I kind of hope he allows those that really need the job to get them this year.

7. It could be a great experience for her.
I used to work with some of the best census field workers in the business and many of them used that experience as leverage for work as field interviewers in social science research. If she gets the job, likes it, and is good at it she may just find it to be a very good skill indeed.

Vibes for her.
