30. those pets are gone.
i tried to get a dog through petfinder a couple of years ago, and it was an exercise in frustration. most of those animals are already gone. most of those shelters will not tell you that. and most of those organizations won't give you a cat, anyway. pretty sure there are babies out there that i could have gotten more easily than that whole process.
i ended up buying a puppy.

35. I met someone who wanted a Bernese Mountain dog
and they got a puppy that was a Bernese mix on petfinder...except it turned out to be a large beagle mix instead. They love the dog, but you can't rely on the shelter's guess of the breed.

38. you got that. and
that is the trouble with mutts. my daughter got a dog at the local humane society. their guess was that the dog was a rott mix, just what she wanted. my guess is that the dog is a dobe/pointer. total pointer personality. she loves her dog, too, but both of them are sad that she is an unfulfilled hunting dog.
not that all purebreds are exactly what they are supposed to be. but your odds are a lot better.

I found both my cat and my first rat terrier through Petfinder. My other rat terrier I just contacted the rescue I got the first one through myself.

My ratties are terrific hunters. Egypt has brought home MANY kills - mice, voles, snakes, birds, etc.

43. i have 2 now, plus
a terrier mutt. i actually bought 2 puppies, a pair of sisters. i wish i had gone to see their home before i bought them, but i probably would have gotten them anyway. they were raised out in the yard with the other rats, and still do not like people all that much. except me, that is.
they are ok hunters, but the mutt has raised the bar for them. he is crazed.

37. I set up an email search for the kind I wanted
and as soon as I received the link I contacted the shelter to hold him for me, which they did. If its a good looking animal you do have to act fast.

42. You may have just run into some bad luck
Just think... slackers like me update the pets. Sometimes they get overlooked and remain there a bit.

We adopt hella through petfinder. The fact that you wanted a specific breed may have been the issue had you contacted me. We end up with things like..German Shepherd/Dauhsund mixes and the sort. I have to tell the adopters that the critter's final size may vary :D

For specific breeds you are better off going to a breed rescue. They are different in the way they do things. They only have THAT breed if that is what you want. Be wary. Some are in it for the money, not many but some. Also, just think.. "rescue" may mean that there will be a little extra work because the critter was mistreated at some point in its life.

Pets are a chore. .. but so are kids. I wouldn't want to go through the day with neither.

:hi:

44. being in chicago was hard. the local pound just can't keep up.
volunteers list the pets, but the staff has no way to keep track of what is up there. i did get a boxer from the pound, tho. just went down there and lucked out.
i did try a suburban pound, and a breed rescue. those guys sent the doggie social worker out, and i guess i flunked, cause i never heard from them again. i suspect it was my fence. they wanted a terrier proof fence, but i don't have $10k to invest in a fence. i build fence proof terriers instead. on the rare occasions that someone leaves a gate open and they get out, they go about 200 ft. and come tearing when i call. don't mind their opinion, but was real unhappy about the way they handled it.
so, yeah, the whole thing left a kinda bad taste in my mouth. lot of great rescuers out there, but also a lot of

40. Get yourself pre-approved for adoption at some of the shelters and agencies.
Establish a relationship with them. That will move the process along quicker when the proper time comes to adopt and it will help them help you find the right pet.
