Last book in its entirety for me would be Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine." I've been looking through sections of "Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics" and "Design It Yourself." All well worth checking out if you hate neoliberalism, are iterested in filmmaking, or like making things (respectively).

Pretty cool book, and it even mentions a show in Boston that I was at where Godflesh's drum machine got stolen, and Napalm Death had to play first while Godflesh reprogrammed a handful of songs. :)

It's not out yet. I reviewed it pre-pub. It's a war memoir of a West Point alumnus and Rhodes Scholar who saw combat in Afghanistan. I'm not a big fan of war memoirs, but this guy is pretty cool. I think he's a Democrat, and I wouldn't be surprised if he runs for office some day.

19. The Dark Side, by Jane Mayer -- how the Bush political appointees legalized torture
It's a very tough book to finish. I get real upset while reading it & have to take a week off sometimes. But I'm up to the last two chapters. Really, just a grueling read.

The last book I finished was Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the Globe by Laurence Bergreen.

20. Collapse, by Jared Diamond
Not quite up to his Guns, Germs, and Steel, but a compelling book nonetheless. Harrowing descriptions of how previous civilizations doomed themselves by over-exploiting their resources, much as the US is doing today. I've also just finished The World Without Us by Alan Weisman, a fascinating glimpse of what would happen to the earth if every single human disappeared tomorrow.

A bit of trivia from the latter book: which human-created structure would still be recognizable several million years from now? Hint: it's neither the Great Wall nor the Pyramids. It's American. The answer surprised me.

55. Sleeping with the Devil: How Washington Sold Our Soul for Saudi Crude
by ex-CIA dude Robert Baer.

I wondered how Baer was voting this year, so I went searching and found this Tavis Smiley interview:

Baer: The world's economy. We can't hit Iran without suffering a major economic setback that would last for 10, 15 years.

Tavis: Does George Bush understand that?

Baer: No. Well, he doesn't understand because he went into Iraq, he opened up Iraq for Iranian influence. He essentially gave Iraq to Iran. It's the greatest folly this country's ever committed, invading Iraq.

Tavis: Does McCain understand that?

Baer: No. Neither of them do.

Tavis: Does Obama understand that?

Baer: He does understand that. He's going to go talk to the Iranians. It's the thing to do - without preconditions. Look, with this sort of power they have in the Persian Gulf, the power over the price of gasoline in this country, we have to talk to these guys without preconditions, ask them what they want.
