I went to go use my food stamps at the corner grocery.
They got busted for accepting food stamps to sell cigarettes. Now they can't accept food stamps for 6 months. That is a lot of money they are going to be losing.

Sucks for me because now I have to walk a mile to get food.

1. try this
I've got one of these carts and love it. Have walked to the grocery store many times with it.

2. A Granny cart!!
I have a cheap one and it doesn't work very well. I need to invest in a sturdier cart. This one looks like it would do the trick. Another thing I have considered is getting a radio flier wagon. I can bring it into the store with me,load it down, and drag it back home.

3. I have done that.
There's a grocery store a hair over a mile from my house also.

The wagon works, but it can be hard to steer, and I had to keep switching arms to prevent getting very uncomfortable. A good-quality cart would probably be better.

6. Something else I have to consider
The grocery is right on the bus line that runs every half an hour. The problem is with the gas prices the way they are today the buses are all PACKED and it really sucks to have to lug your groceries and navigate the aisle for a seat.

29. Yeah, because I didn't play "Ain't it awful" with him and explained my experiences with a bike
So I should just say it's all hopeless? Having you ever hear of that game "Why don't you, yes, but?" You give someone who feels down advice and then they always come back with some reason why they can't do this or that. So it's too far to walk, the bus is too full...Damn it! I believe that my echoing that defeatist behavior is not helping anyone, but feel free to join the negativity club, if you think that is the way to make him feel better about life. I just happen to disagree. (That IS okay, isn't it?)

11. If you can ride a bike, a bike trailer is a great thing.
If you don't have much cargo, a rack and panniers might be enough, but you can carry weeks' worth of groceries in one of those trailers they sell for hauling toddlers.

15. I have one that is just for cargo and it hauls so much!
But I also have panniers that are A-1 (rubber bottom, well-constructed and good structure). I also have had folding baskets in the past that really rock. I would recommend those for the average person. I used to put laundry and groceries in them and it was all good.

41. Go for this one

You can stack stuff underneath, the bag holds a ton, it drives like a stroller and is pretty damn maneuverable as it was designed to be used at the beach and such, so it's very forgiving of poor terrain and curbs and such, and it can hold up to 100 lbs. I LOVE mine (after spending roughly the same on metal carts that crapped out on me). It's called the Wonder Wheeler Deluxe, I found mine at Bed Bath and Beyond for something like $45.

8. It's a good reason to exercise...we all need it
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 06:13 PM by mizzuzmojorizin
And I know of what I speak. Never have owned a car in my life (I don't even drive). I think if you have a place to walk towards, it is a meaningful exercise. Gyms don't offer fresh air and they are contrived movement. The only purpose is to work your body, whereas walking to the store accomplishes two things at once.

And just for the record, exercising is good for all of us--even those with chronic issues. Now I am assuming she isn't wheel-chair bound or anything. Then I will feel like a total douche.

and he hasn't been well. So throwing that exercise thing around isn't really necessary. Of course exercise is good for everyone, providing that their bodies can handle it.

And exercise can make a person feel better. I am not talking about strenuous activity; simply getting to moving and fresh air and sunshine are good for us. So keep laughing if that amuses you. Oxygen is very nourishing and necessary for us.

How did you get by? Are you pretty young still? I had a car at 16 but I lived in a rural area and had a job at a burger joint. Do you live in a super large city with good public transportation? What if you wanted to go somewhere, what do you do..rent a car?

16. I live in a suburb near a large city and there is very good public transit
I am in my early 40s, took Driver's Ed (got a D) and my mom even paid for a private lesson afterwards, but I just never wanted to drive. I can't stand cars, but I love those little electric ones (can't think of the name). They are so cute!

As for going places, I don't, but they have these things called Zip cars where they leave them in lots in Chicago and people take them for a certain amount of time (a couple of hours or days or whatever) and they don't have to pay for insurance, as well as all the other headaches. It's catching on but I don't need it for my lifestyle. If you are in a rural area, it's a different story, I suppose. But I would look into electric stuff if I were in that situation.

No great loss I can assure you! Not to mention fender benders, DUIs, back seat drivers, passengers who wont keep their mouth shut for 5 minutes, sick passengers throwing up, wrecks that total your car, being stuck on the freeway. And so many other headaches. Oh, and insurance. Count yourself lucky.

40. Yeah, I feel like I just didn't buy the hype of car ownership
I was working with some people who saw me put my groceries in my folding baskets after work one night and the guy goes: "Is that your ride?" (I guess that's what the youngsters call mode of transportation. Ugh.) I nodded and another coworker laughed and said: "Hey, that's her trunk!" (in regards to my baskets) and I just kept my cool. Oh, and the guy who asked if my bike was my ride said that I looked like a bag lady, also. Fast forward a couple of months and this same dewd was bytching about his new $20,000 SUV (this was 10 years ago) that was on the blink already! He was starting to thumb through the car ads...

42. Ha, ha...karma is a bitch sometimes!
Ask those hecklers..."Who's laughing now?" I sure miss riding my bike. I lived near the beach in Santa Monica and rode my Schwinn everywhere except when I took the .50 cent Blue Bus to work. I was without a car for years. The one I have now has a cracked windshield, rear fogger doesn't work and it's a 1987. I take the bus to work because it's only $15 a month and I get there in the same amount of time, sans road rage, rain, darkeness, sun in eye bother. Plus on the bus I can chat, read my book and have a mug of coffee.
