The Good news-I can run again. The Bad news-I have gout
So after finding out back in August that I had a broken leg (stress fracture) since April-ran a marathon on it
I have been wearing a Bone Growth Stimulator 10 hours a day (or there abouts) since.

Last weekend at my in-laws my ankle was KILLING ME. I was sure I had rebroken it. Turns out I have gout.

I thought gout was like scurvy or something but really it is like arthritis its just that usually it doesn't hit men in his 40's.

Doctor said today that I could run again (November marathon is OUT) but less than 5 miles. More time in the pool for me!!!

Check out the diet. The more Ph the better basically.

http://www.goutcure.com/goutcausfood.html

All of the foods belowcan be responsible for excessive uric acid production. Even though somedo not contain purines, they can still cause the system to naturallyproduce uric acid. They are as follows: alcohol, anchovies, asparagus, cauliflower, mushrooms, consommé, herring, meat gravies, broth, bouillon, mussels, sardines, red meats, organ meats, processed meats(hot dogs, lunch meats, etc.), fried foods, roasted nuts, any foodcooked in oil (heated oil destroys vitamin E), rich foods (cakes, sugarproducts, white flour products), dark greens vegetables, dried fruits, fish, caffeine, beans, lentils, eggs, oatmeal, peas, poultry, yeastproducts, acetaminophen, and low doses of aspirin.

While under a Gout Attack all of the above foods should be completely avoided as well as the following.

1. My father had gout. His (almost) instant relief?
Cherries. Fresh in season, or just canned in water if not in season.

I've posted this a couple of times here for other posters who have gout, and I think at least one of them mentioned they too got relief this way.

14. I'll second that.
Cherries in any reasonably pure form. Fresh, if you can get them. Dried if you can't. Cherry juice if it's unsweetened. I swear I was feeling better within hours, and it was probably cleared up within a day or so.

2. Be careful. Increasing uric acid elimination can also lead to
an increased risk of uric acid kidney stones. I don't have gout, but I *do* have uric acid kidney stones. Hurts like nothing else in the world.

My urologist recommended consuming a lot of lemon juice to help dissolve the uric acid stones in my kidneys. Maybe that can also help dissolve the acid crystals in your ankle?

4. Check out the side effects of Colchicine
It's so old it is NOT FDA approved. From the first century CE. My doctor doesn't like this stuff so I have to go to my GP tomorrow to get another treatment.

I HAVE FREAKIN' GOUT :eyes: luckily I have not gotten any of the side effects.

History

Colchicum extract was first described as a treatment for gout in De Materia Medica by Padanius Dioscorides in the first century CE.

The colchicine alkaloid was first isolated in 1820 by the two French chemists P.S. Pelletier and J. Caventon.<1>

It was later identified as a tricyclic alkaloid, and its pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects for gout were linked to its ability to bind with tubulin.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colchicine

SIDE EFFECTS

Adverse reactions in decreasing order of severity are: bone marrow depression, with aplastic anemia, with agranulocytosis or with thrombocytopenia may occur in patients receiving long-term therapy. Peripheral neuritis, purpura, myopathy, loss of hair, and reversible azoospermia have also been reported.

8. I went to the ER with awful joint pain in my big toe...
the doc thought maybe gout, shot me up with some heavy duty pain killers + steroids and prescribed Colchicine with the following instructions...

"Take one tablet every hour until the pain subsides, or you SHIT YOURSELF!"

Not exactly my idea of a great solution if you cannot run to the bathroom in a moments notice!

I never filled that script and decided to see a real podiatrist the next day...
He gave me a heavy dose of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meds over a course of three weeks. That took the swelling down.

There are two tests that they can use to check if it is gout. A blood test and a fluid extraction from the joint.

9. I'm bullish on kudzu root. It's going places!
I hadn't heard this about the pH. CW is to avoid foods containing purines (most meat, legumes, beer, and no more casting asparagus!).

I find it hard to believe that "Drugs (Psychedelic)" could possibly be ingested in sufficient quantity to affect to body's pH. :eyes:

He said most important was to not eat organs (Kidneys, liver, chitlins, etc._

11. I feel your pain.
Sweet Fucking Christ nothing hurts like gout.

I had to give up my famous navy beans and meatballs because of gout.

The first time it hit me, I just assumed that I had broken my toe somehow.
I had to go out and buy a "House" cane so I could hobble to work.

Once I figured out what it was I modified my diet and haven't had an attack since. (knock wood)

I still got up and down two 16 step staircases and drove home 3 hours but then I have been told that I have a high tolerance of pain.

My wife commented how even *I* complained about the pain. It hurts.

30. Yip, I've never had a broken bone but thought my first attack WAS one!1
It was in the '80s. N'Orlins. Ah, yes, I remember it well.

We had partied till the wee hours. In the morning when I dragged out of bed and started to put weight on the feet, my left ankle or such went straight to PAIN. I literally wondered what had happened, had I fallen and twisted it, or did I kick something?!1

We went to the River(? mall?) and I hobbled to a bench and sat there while my friends looked it over. I was driving and Dr Dean EDELL was on the air. A caller described her gout attack and I immediately zoned into it. Dr Dean described the thing and the causes, like in the O.P. For the next day or two I ate nothing but salads, and it went away.

Since then I've had occasional attacks, with a couple or more years in between. In one that was actually treated by a doctor, I took the pills, not knowing what the pills were for. The next time, I asked the pharmacist, and he said that this was basically a painkiller, prescription strength as opposed to over the counter.

I think I understand that once it's started, the prescription is for pain, not to "cure."

My current doc says to stay on the preemptive prescription PERMANENTLY to circumvent the kidney stone type of development.

This thread reminded me of the cherries remedy, and it was a good excuse to fetch a cherry pie for pre-debate snack.
