I am in Houston waiting for Ike with 37 other people, ask me anything.
I spent the last 2 days cutting plywood for windows, and I am tired.

Almost lost power for a moment.

Talk fast.

1. Adequate supplies?
Liquor?
Cigarettes?
Snacks?
Oh, and water and toilet paper?

5. We have everything.
The worst part was waiting to see if we would get hit, now Ike is almost here.

Houston will be a mess, like in 1983.

8. So, I'm not the only one with the correct priorities...
Seriously. That's pretty much my list when the Big Weather is coming.

(Oh, and the Aladdin lamp filled up so I can have light to read by. And the wind-up radio.)

9. When a big snow or ice storm hits, that's our list
Plus oil for the oil lamp (so we can read)

We do need to get a wind-up radio

Go get one.

2. I'll not ask, I'll TELL you: Keep your head down. Stay on the first floor, but be ready
to get your ass upstairs if the water starts coming in.

That damn Ship Channel could turn into a funnel for the surge.

Be safe. Get back to us as soon as you can.

7. We are in high area of Houston, and my house is 3 foot above ground.
I live near a very deep part of I-10 that floods, better I-10 then us.

The surge from the Ship Channel will be bad, I wouldn't live in a low lying area.

I bought my house for a reason.

I will miss DU, there are several places that have free WiFi.

Our library how WiFi now, I think the city building will get power first.

I will get back as soon as I can.

10. Everything will be OK, the winds are suppose to be around 90 miles per hour.
My house can take that to spare.

It will be a long night, I am so tired I might fall asleep.

11. I am not scared.
My first hurricane was Carla when I was 7 years old.

We were in a farmhouse, that hurricane lasted 3 days.

I still remember the sounds of the wind, but I was so young I didn't know to be afraid.

13. Riding it out in Beaumont....(70 miles east of Houston)
We are starting to get large gusts and sprinklings of rain.

I hope we don't lose power but I know we will. I have made hotel reservations for Sunday in Lake Charles in case we lose power (which I am sure we will). It is just to hot this time of year not to have a/c

14. We have two generators, plenty of gas.
The best investment we made.

They are really nice to have if you live down here.

Take care in Beaumont, the wind is picking up now but I don't know if it is raining.

They are expensive but in times like these worth every penny.

40. We are popular now with generators.
The only problem is getting the gas.

We have 15 5 gallon gas cans, that should last if we lose power.

The price of gas is sure to go up with Ike.

30. We are in different rooms.
We are watching the coverage on TV and a movie on another tv.

We have beds everywhere, not that anyone will get any sleep.

We will have flooding in places.

The rain hasn't gotten here yet.

The hurricane is suppose to last about 6 hours, that is not bad.

The worst part was waiting for Ike, not knowing where it would hit and how strong.

I cut 125 pieces of plywood in the past two days, I earned those beers.

The people we were helping have health problems and they were so glad to see us.

It is good to know they are save behind the plywood.

35. I can't talk.
I just went outside to feed one of our stray cats on the back deck.

But there is not that much wind back there.

The little cat is hiding in a box, I put the food inside.

She or he is very young, something happened to his or her mother.

He shouldn't be going out in the wind, something could be blowing around outside.

43. My brother, sister and cousin live in Houston. I spoke with all of them
today and they're ready. I was born and raised in Corpus Christi and I was just around your age when Carla hit. I was in Ceila in '70 which I'll never forget. We were without electricity for 3 weeks in August. I live in California now and was in the Northridge Quake in '94. I have to say I'd pick a hurricane over an earthquake. You can prepare for Hurricanes (sounds like you've done a fine job) and at least it looks like it's not going to be at strong as we thought. Good luck!

48. My dad (91) my sister and her husband are now in Houston,
staying in a hotel that has electricity. They came to Houston from League City. They are all OK, and heard from neighbors that their house is OK, too but some in their neighborhood are not so well off.

They were very lucky - they were going to ride it out but decided to leave Thursday.

Good luck, everyone there.
